Text Quotes
I had grown up working in a video store, and I’d grown up more with film than I had with theater, so I kind of felt a natural call  (Theater Quotes) Guns don’t walk into a theater by themselves and shoot people. You have to look at who’s behind it, who’s behind the trigger?  (Theater Quotes) People may know me from films, but theater is my first love. I did about 35 plays before I even landed my first screen role. I’m very comfortable on stage, and theater is not something you can just wing  (Theater Quotes) I started in theater, and I love to go back to theater, just to have the experience and recharge my batteries, creatively  (Theater Quotes) My whole background, my whole life was just lots and lots of theater, a lot of that being musical theater  (Theater Quotes) I never consciously got into comedy. It was sort of one of those things where I was a theater student, I was acting, I was doing comedy, I was doing dramatic stuff, so it’s been something that I’ve always done and enjoyed doing and had an instinct to be relatively good at  (Theater Quotes) I’d studied theater growing up and loved that, but didn’t have many examples of artists around me  (Theater Quotes) I’ve auditioned for musicals a lot, but I think my voice didn’t really match what they were looking for. I went to school for musical theater for a year and dropped out. Legit musicals are not quite my forte  (Theater Quotes) There’s nothing like theater. It’s really amazing. But it does take up all of your time. I would like to get into more film, just because I find it super fascinating  (Theater Quotes) Theater is a dance of a different kind, a dance of rawness and characters stripped down  (Theater Quotes) I understood that I was not the best director in the world nor the worst director in the world. I realized that there is a very mysterious element to what works and what doesn’t work in the theater. And it’s good to know that from the beginning  (Theater Quotes) Theater isn’t there to provide answers. Only possibilities. I just ask the questions. But I believe hope comes from the fact that there is a potential for redemption. At the core, that’s what matters in the theater I’m attracted to. Do we dare to hope? Do we allow ourselves to hope?  (Theater Quotes) I love theater work because of the immediate effect your performance has on the audience. And I love the repetition; I love getting on the same stage for more than a month and reciting the same lines, trying to make a small or large step towards an improvement in my acting  (Theater Quotes) I started out really into musical theater. So you can imagine I was super popular. I wasn’t awkward looking at all  (Theater Quotes) I’ve seen plays that are, objectively, total messes that move me in ways that their tidier brethren do not. That’s the romantic mystery of great theater. Translating this ineffability into printable prose is a challenge that can never be fully met  (Theater Quotes) The world is: fun, and familiar, and healthful, and unbelievably refreshing, and lovely. And it is the theater of the spiritual; it is the multiform utterly obedient to a mystery  (Theater Quotes) I find playwriting really painful. I love it, or I wouldn’t do it, but I don’t love the theater as much as I love movies  (Theater Quotes) I was always the only black in the movie theater, the only black in class, the only black in the library, the only black in the discotheque. I always felt observed and judged  (Theater Quotes) I think that there’s a particular type of person who goes into children’s theater, and then goes into theater in high school. All of a sudden, lots of new companies needed actors  (Theater Quotes) My happiest times in the theater are when I do ensemble pieces. I really got into theater because of that closeness  (Theater Quotes) I know I always had a lot of energy growing up and I had to put it somewhere. Theater allowed me to really feel things, to laugh, to cry, to explode outward. I could do anything and it was totally accepted and appreciated. If I hadn’t gone into the theater, I probably would have been a psychotic killer  (Theater Quotes) The trick about the theater is at the end of the day you cannot take any of it personally  (Theater Quotes) I had started doing theater in high school, and while I was doing that, I got my manager  (Theater Quotes) There’s always something more to be accomplished with a character. Theater is a human experience. There’s nothing shellacked or finished off about it. I guess that’s why it always draws me back  (Theater Quotes) Most theater methodology is predicated on the idea of repeated actions. That’s what you work toward. Having the actor repeat the same moment eight times a week. In a film, it’s getting that one moment right  (Theater Quotes) The truth of the matter is, every film is imperfect. It’s the nature of the beast. One of the things that people ask me all the time is, what’s the difference between theater and film, and one of the biggest differences is, in the theater you always get another go  (Theater Quotes) Theaters are always going to be around, and doing fine. With computers and technology, we’re becoming more and more secluded from each other. And the movie theater is one of the last places where we can still gather and experience something together.
