Text Quotes
I’m conflicted with theater in the city because you want to reach a diverse audience, and that audience doesn’t typically go to the theater  (Theater Quotes) I’m a kid who did stock and summer youth theater where we’d put up two shows and you had no rehearsal. I’ve also understudied, where I’ve had to go on with no rehearsal  (Theater Quotes) My mom thought I might be good for voiceover. She thought I had a cute voice, so maybe I could do a cartoon or something. And while we were looking into that, we also thought I should get into theater acting, so I tried it and the first audition I went on, I booked it. And it kind of just snowballed from there  (Theater Quotes) I feel as though I would be delighted to come back into working in the film world, and working in the theater world again. I’m just gonna see what happens  (Theater Quotes) Actors and writers need to come back to the theater because it’s a place where you can learn. You have to pay your dues, and people who haven’t paid their dues in the theater, I think, have a hard time creating a whole career  (Theater Quotes) Communication is very important. And the arts do that, whether it’s film or theater  (Theater Quotes) I teach musical theater three days a week at the school that my wife and I graduated from  (Theater Quotes) Theater is perhaps one of the few places left where we are in a dialogue right now. Everything has become so partisan, and the rhetoric has become so heated, that conversation is almost impossible  (Theater Quotes) I’m not a huge fan of improv theater or improv sports or whatever, because it still just looks like a tool. It looks like a technique to me  (Theater Quotes) I think about the audience in the sense that I serve as my own audience. I have to please myself the way, if I saw the movie in a theater, I would be pleased. Do I think about catering to an audience? No  (Theater Quotes) One night I had an idea while I was at the movies: to photograph the film itself. I tried to imagine photographing an entire feature film with my camera. I could already picture the projection screen making itself visible as a white rectangle. In my imagination, this would appear as a glowing, white rectangle; it would come forward from the projection surface and illuminate the entire theater. This idea struck me as being very interesting, mysterious, and even religious  (Theater Quotes) I like melodrama because it is situated just at the meeting point between life and theater  (Theater Quotes) Broadway has the most savvy audience anywhere. They see everything and they know their theater. As sophisticated and subtle as you think you can be, the houses you get here will want something finer  (Theater Quotes) I still feel like a novice when it comes to classical theater, but I don’t ever want to become comfortable with anything. The greatest creativity comes from being nervous and uncomfortable  (Theater Quotes) I wanted to be an actor because I wanted to be onstage. I wanted to do musical theater, and from that I realized I was interested in plays. I never imagined myself on television. I was so lucky to be onstage my whole life  (Theater Quotes) All the difference in the world between the movies and the thrill I get out of a play at the theater. Ay, yes! Like fooling around with paper dolls when you could be playing with a real live baby  (Theater Quotes) The truth is you don’t like the theater except the times when you’re in a room by yourself putting the play on paper  (Theater Quotes) When you go to the movie theater and the opening of this movie and you see the kids just cracking up with a character you are giving your voice to, you get goose bumps. It’s so beautiful  (Theater Quotes) I think that theater is a unique way to communicate with people as they gather together with other people they may not even know. It creates a sense of shared community for the time of the performance that hopefully carries over into other aspects of the audience’s life because they have shared this experience together  (Theater Quotes) I’ve always been drawn to stories and telling them; whether it was through being a part of theater when I was a little kid, or film, or with music, there’s just been an innate desire to feel that connection  (Theater Quotes) Because I trained in theater, I always leave a film shoot feeling like I haven’t done anything, like I just sat in front of the camera and whispered, essentially  (Theater Quotes) I feel like there’s an obsession with pace right now in theater, with things being very fast and very witty and very loud, and I think we’re all so freaked out about theater keeping audiences interested because everybody’s so freaked out about theater becoming irrelevant  (Theater Quotes) I was 22 and stopped writing plays, and I didn’t start again until I was 25. I was writing badly. In college, I attempted to write these more conventional plays, but the theater I loved was downtown experimental theater. I didn’t feel like I could do that either. It didn’t occur to me to do my own thing  (Theater Quotes) I grew up in the theater. I began my career at 3. That was the first time I stepped onto a provisional stage  (Theater Quotes) I’m constantly involved in theater, looking at theater, trying to do work in theater, support theater. And that’s kind of my creative passion  (Theater Quotes) I mean, part of me would love to be a fat tenured professor of theater someday  (Theater Quotes) There’s definitely a visual aspect and an emotional aspect to a song. And that harks back, for me, to theater  (Theater Quotes) I’ve done a lot of things with theater that I’m very, very proud of  (Theater Quotes) If actors could actually make a living doing theater, that would be my first choice. Sitcoms are the closest thing to being onstage in front of an audience  (Theater Quotes) I was in theater when I was in elementary, middle school and high school. I didn’t know it would be an actual profession for me. I didn’t think of it as a reality  (Theater Quotes)
