Text Quotes
My novels and poems are meant to be read aloud. That’s why jazz musicians have been able to adapt my stuff  (Poems Quotes) I like poems that are daggers that sing. I like poems that for all the power of the sentiments expressed, and all the power to upset and offend, are so well made that they’re achieved things. However much they upset you, they also affect you  (Poems Quotes) When I am asked how I began writing poems, I talk about the indifference of nature  (Poems Quotes) Poetic justice, poetic justice.. if I told you that a flower bloom in a dark room would you trust it. I mean I write poems in these songs  (Poems Quotes) You never forget the books you loved as a kid. You never forget the poems you memorized, the first book you read until the cover fell off, the book you read hidden from your mother. What an honor to hold hands with a child’s imagination in this way  (Poems Quotes) I am preparing myself for death. When I go to sleep, I try to keep myself smiling. So that when I die, I have a smile on my lips. I want an electric cremation. I don’t want any poems or fuss after that. And for heaven’s sake, don’t bring back my ashes. Flush them down the toilet if the crematorium refuses to keep them. If they tell you that I am dead, I want you to give a big laugh  (Poems Quotes) The years rolled their brutal course down the hill of time. Still poor, my clothes still smelling of the horse barn, still writing those doubtful poems where too much emotion clashed with too many words  (Poems Quotes) My poems are political in the deeper sense of the word. Political means to live in your time, to be a man of your time  (Poems Quotes) The reason a poet is a poet is to write poems, not to advertise himself as a poet  (Poems Quotes) I’ve often said that all poetry is political. This is because real poems deal with a human response to reality and politics is part of reality, history in the making. Even if a poet writes about sitting in a glass house drinking tea, it reflects politics  (Poems Quotes) I’ve said what I’m prepared to say in my poems, and then journalists think that you’re going to tell them a whole lot more  (Poems Quotes) The interesting thing is that you don’t often meet a poet who doesn’t have a sense of humour, and some of them do keep it out of their poems because they’re afraid of being seen as light versifiers  (Poems Quotes) I’m trying to write poems that involve beginning at a known place, and ending up at a slightly different place. I’m trying to take a little journey from one place to another, and it’s usually from a realistic place, to a place in the imagination  (Poems Quotes) I think of something quite different from a snapshot. I know of a lot of poems, some very fine ones, that are like snapshots, but I’m more interested in poetry that is like an endless film, long stories, things that weave together many different strands, like a big piece of cloth, not like a photograph  (Poems Quotes) My stories are sometimes closer to poems or meditations, but often there is at least a little narrative in them  (Poems Quotes) Many of my poems try to use a comic element to reach a place that isn’t comic at all. The comic element works as a surprise. It is unexpected and energizing  (Poems Quotes) My poems always begin with a metaphor, but my way into the metaphor may be a word, an image, even a sound. And I rarely know the nature of the metaphor when I begin to write, but there is an attentiveness that a writer develops, a sudden alertness that is much like the feel of a fish brushing against a hook  (Poems Quotes) In all the poems I’ve written I’ve not really engaged in politics, and when I’ve found myself moving in that direction I’ve always stopped myself  (Poems Quotes) The more I read my poems, the more I find out about them. I still read them with the same passion I felt when I wrote them as a young man  (Poems Quotes) Sometimes, when you are in a really constrained situation, it makes you more focused about what you want to say and where you’re heading. The most beautiful love poems that were ever written are sonnets, composed in a very constraining form  (Poems Quotes) I like connecting the abstract to the concrete. There’s a tension in that. I believe the reader or listener should be able to enter the poem as a participant. So I try to get past resolving poems  (Poems Quotes) I think of my poems as personal and public at the same time. You could say they serve as psychological overlays. One fits on top of the other, and hopefully there’s an ongoing evolution of clarity  (Poems Quotes) Talk of poems and prayers and promises, and things that we believe in. How sweet it is to love someone, how right it is to care, how long it’s been since yesterday  (Poems Quotes) I think of myself as a writer who photographs. Images, for me, can be considered poems, short stories or essays. And I’ve always thought the best place for my photographs was inside books of my own creation  (Poems Quotes) Since I was a small child, I was always writing either poems or plays... plays in which I had the starring part  (Poems Quotes) People used to say poems were different to songs but I don’t think they are  (Poems Quotes) The great poems are not about experience, but are the experience itself, felt in the body  (Poems Quotes) I drank some coffee and my outlook improved immensely. I was ready to write some poems and, I don’t know, get drunk, run around, take my shirt off and get kicked out of someplace. You know, live a little  (Poems Quotes) Poems... are perfume bottles momentarily unstopped-what they release is volatile and will vanish, and yet it can be released again  (Poems Quotes) Hypocrisy, false labels, can create slogans but no poems; propaganda but not life: there are no roots, there are no realities to nurture creative work  (Poems Quotes)
