Text Quotes
My earlier poems were sadder than my poems are today, perhaps because I wrote them in confusion or when I was unhappy. But I am not a melancholy person, quite the contrary, no one enjoys laughing more than I do  (Poems Quotes) The number of people writing poems is vast, and their reasons for doing so are many, that much can be surmised from the stacks of submissions  (Poems Quotes) There’s so much to think about when you’re becoming an adult, and there’s so many great poems about that apprehension and excitement  (Poems Quotes) Poems seem to have a life of their own. They tell you when enough is enough  (Poems Quotes) I think I’m a very good reader of poetry, but obviously, like everybody, I have a set of criteria for reading poems, and I’m not shy about presenting them, so if people ask for my critical response to a poem, I tell them what works and why, and what doesn’t work and why  (Poems Quotes) A novel is what you call something that won’t sell if you call it poems or short stories  (Poems Quotes) I am gonna write poems til I die and when I have gotten outta this body I am gonna hang round in the wind and knock over everybody who got their feet on the ground  (Poems Quotes) A flock of geese leave their lake and take wing, turning to poems in the sky  (Poems Quotes) I’ve not been a prolific poet, and it always seemed to me to be a bad idea to feel that you had to produce in order to get... credits. Production of a collection of poems every three years or every five years, or whatever, looks good, on paper. But it might not be good; it might be writing on a kind of automatic pilot  (Poems Quotes) When I went to film school about three years ago, the first two years you’re required to make a series of short films. I started making films based on short poems  (Poems Quotes) ... the characters in my books all resemble each other. They live, with minor variations, the same moments, the same perils, and when I speak of them, my language, which is inspired by them, repeats the same poems in the same tone  (Poems Quotes) Who you are contributes to your poetry in a number of important ways, but you shouldn’t identify with your poems so closely that when they are cut, you’re the one that bleeds  (Poems Quotes) I can’t think of a case where poems changed the world, but what they do is they change people’s understanding of what’s going on in the world  (Poems Quotes) If rulers refuse to consider poems as crimes, then someone must commit crimes that serve the function of poetry, or texts that possess the resonance of terrorism  (Poems Quotes) Maybe you’re one of those people who writes poems, but rarely reads them. Let me put this as delicately as I can: If you don’t read, your writing is going to suck  (Poems Quotes) Clouds are poems, and the most moving poems linger on the blackboard so long, written in cursive so lovely, they also exist inside our fingertips. We never really erase them at the end of the lesson  (Poems Quotes) If poets often commit suicide, it is not because their poems are bad but because they are good. Whoever heard of a bad poet committing suicide? The reader is only a little better off. The exhilaration of a good poem lasts twenty minutes, an hour at most. Unlike the scientist, the artist has reentry problems that are frequent and catastrophic  (Poems Quotes) The small things of life were often so much bigger than the great things... the trivial pleasure like cooking, one’s home, little poems especially sad ones, solitary walks, funny things seen and overheard  (Poems Quotes) I already read everything. I read poems and plays and novels and newspapers and comic books and magazines. I read tins in supermarkets and leaflets that come through the door, unsolicited mail. None of it lasts long and it doesn’t give me answers. Reading too fast is not soothing  (Poems Quotes) When you draw, you copy the world don’t you? You remake it on paper, but it isn’t the same. It’s yours. No one else could have created it just like that. When I make poems, I use the words we all use, but the order and the sound create a new power. This wood is someone’s creation. We stumble through it’s tendrils, as if we’re crawling through the synapses of his mind  (Poems Quotes) You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that fleeting moment when you feel alive. It is not for unsteady souls  (Poems Quotes) The miracle of man is not how far he has sunk but how magnificently he has risen. We are known among the stars by our poems, not our corpses. No creature who began as a mathematical improbability, who was selected through millions of years of unprecedented environmental hardship and change for ruggedness, ruthlessness, cunning, and adaptability, and who in the short ten thousand years of what we may call civilization has achieved such wonders as we find about us, may be regarded as a creature without promise  (Poems Quotes) Standing before you as the advocate of the lower races, I declare what I believe cannot be gainsaid... that just so soon and so far as we pour into all our schools the songs, the poems, and literature of mercy toward these lower creatures, just so soon and so far shall we reach the roots not only of cruelty, but of crime  (Poems Quotes) The language you use for your poems should be the language you use with your friends  (Poems Quotes) Reread, rewrite, reread, rewrite. If it still doesn’t work, throw it away. It’s a nice feeling, and you don’t want to be cluttered with the corpses of poems and stories which have everything in them except the life they need  (Poems Quotes) I try to hold both history and wilderness in mind, that my poems may the true measure of things and stand against the unbalance and ignorance of our times  (Poems Quotes) The language with which I make my poems has nothing to do with one spoken here, or anywhere  (Poems Quotes) Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their families, their histories too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems  (Poems Quotes) My poems, I think, exist in a state of tension between the love of natural beauty and the fear of natural meaninglessness or absurdity  (Poems Quotes) I wondered if I was just the sum of my brain scan, little dots clustered in my frontal lobe. Is that where the poems came from?  (Poems Quotes)
