Text Quotes
I want to write poems which are very emotional, but I would have some hesitation in saying I want to write poems which are sentimental  (Poems Quotes) I wish I’d been better able to resist the sense of obligation to write some of the poems I did. It’s in the nature of commissioned work to be written too much from the side of your mind that knows what it’s doing, which dries up the poetry  (Poems Quotes) Keats writes better about poems than anybody I’ve ever read. The things that he says about what he wants his own poems to be are the ideals that I share  (Poems Quotes) Pretty much the day I stopped being laureate, the poems that had been few and far between came back to me, like birds in the evening nesting in a tree  (Poems Quotes) The best public poems aren’t necessarily those that go at the subject like a bull at a gate  (Poems Quotes) I sometimes like to tinker with poems that have failed, ones that I have sent aside. Even years afterward, I will revisit them if there is something about them that I cannot give up on  (Poems Quotes) I would not say I chose to write long poems on a conscious level. The long poem has been a relative constant  (Poems Quotes) Most victims of my autobiographical verse are either far too polite, remarkably understanding unaware that I have written poems about them  (Poems Quotes) To me many short poems read and write like beginnings that simply whet my appetite; I want to get over that  (Poems Quotes) I would like to be proud of having written some poems that will be remembered, but I will never know whether I will have any reason to be proud of that  (Poems Quotes) If I were brave enough to say so, I’d like to think that I had written some poems that people are not going to forget  (Poems Quotes) Our poems will have failed if our readers are not brought by them beyond the poems  (Poems Quotes) On that other novels followed: but I still wrote fairy tales and dreamy poems of another world  (Poems Quotes) For honesty is before honor; and though man must write his poems in sounding words, god’s poems are printed best in the brave and silent duties of common life  (Poems Quotes) The weakness of art is that great poems do not ennoble politics, as they certainly should, and the trouble with politics is that they inspire poets only to mockery and scorn  (Poems Quotes) I cannot say where you are. Unreachable by prayer, even if poems are prayers. Unseeable in the air, even if souls are stars  (Poems Quotes) Poverty is very good in poems, but it is very bad in a house. It is very good in maxims and in sermons, but it is very bad in practical life  (Poems Quotes) Poems reveal secrets when they are analyzed. The poet’s pleasure in finding ingenious ways to enclose her secrets should be matched by the reader’s pleasure in unlocking and revealing these secrets  (Poems Quotes) It is very difficult to pass from pleasure to work. Accordingly more poems have been swallowed up by sorrow than ever happiness caused to blaze forth in unparalleled radiance  (Poems Quotes) It is not hope but despair that gives us the measure of our ambitions. We may yield secretly to beautiful poems of hope but grief looms start and stripped of all veils  (Poems Quotes) I can understand your wanting to write poems, but I don’t quite know what you mean by being a poet  (Poems Quotes) Once I planned to write a book of poems entirely about the things in my pocket. But I found it would be too long; and the age of the great epics is past  (Poems Quotes) But in a lot of ways my poems are very conventional, and it’s no big deal for me to write a poem in either free verse or strict form; modern poets can, and do, do both  (Poems Quotes) I don’t expect you’ll hear me writing any poems to the greater glory of Ronald and Nancy Reagan  (Poems Quotes) I believe that poems are a score for performance by the reader, and that you become the speaking voice. You don’t read or overhear the voice in the poem - you are the voice in the poem  (Poems Quotes) My poems... the ones that start out as jokes become these big ponderous things and the ones that start out ponderous devolve into jokes  (Poems Quotes) The majority of poems one outgrows and outlives, as one outgrows and outlives the majority of human passions  (Poems Quotes) The poems to come are for you and for me and are not for mostpeople... you and I are human beings; mostpeople are snobs  (Poems Quotes) It is always hard for poets to believe that one says their poems are bad not because one is a fiend but because their poems are bad  (Poems Quotes) I have always believed that poems beg to be read aloud, even if the reader is in a world all her own  (Poems Quotes)
