Text Quotes
The best books of our times have included the three mature volumes of Philip Larkin. They’re very short books of poems, and very carefully arranged.  (Poems Quotes) For children: I’m writing a picture book about the Big Dipper and a novel about a cricket, a firefly and a vole. For grownups: I’m writing poems.  (Poems Quotes) If you must write prose or poems, the words you use should be your own. Don’t plagiarize or take ‘on loan’. There’s always someone, somewhere, with a big nose, who knows, who’ll trip you up and laugh when you fall.  (Poems Quotes) I had been writing poems and stories since I learned to make letters. I had placed poems in a hardcover anthology at the age of 6. And I knew more big words than anyone else in the 10th grade.  (Poems Quotes) I’ve got some incredible fans actually - so loyal and they make me birthday cards and Christmas cards. I got this package of poems and artwork based around the songs. They’ve got this thing called ‘Floetry’ where they all have to put in artwork. They’ve set up their own competitions and stuff which is kind of amazing.  (Poems Quotes) Poems are a dance of language that comes out when my body taps into the rhythm of language. Rhythm gets us naked and exposes our selves completely.  (Poems Quotes) The poems were the only thing I wrote that was not for everyone else. Then my editors at Penguin, who were also friends and had seen several of them, aggressively urged me to do a book. Editors can be aggressive, especially after drinks. That’s how ‘Beyond This Dark House’ appeared.  (Poems Quotes) I read everything. I’ll read a John Grisham novel, I’ll sit and read a whole book of poems by Maya Angelou, or I’ll just read some Mary Oliver - this is a book that was given to me for Christmas. No particular genre. And I read in French, and I read in German, and I read in English. I love to see how other people use language.  (Poems Quotes) I find a lot of poetry very disappointing, but I do have poets that I go back to. One book of poetry that I’d like to mention is ‘The Exchange’ by Sophie Cabot Black. Her poems are difficult without being too difficult.  (Poems Quotes) In the Book of Poetry there are three hundred poems, but the meaning of all of them may be put in a single sentence: Have no debasing thoughts.  (Poems Quotes) Ordering is very important with essays, even if a reader doesn’t read the essays or the poems in order through the book.  (Poems Quotes) I prefer always to think that I am creating a book, not a series of stand-alone poems  (Poems Quotes) Many poets write books. They’ll tell you: Well, I’ve got my next book, but there are two poems I need to write, one about x, one about y. This is a wonder to me.  (Poems Quotes) As Borges has taught us, all the books in the library are contemporary. Great poems are like granaries: they are always ready to enlarge their store.  (Poems Quotes) When I was one day old, I learned how to read. When I was two days old, I started to write. By the time I was three, I had finished 212 short stories, 38 novels, 730 poems, and one very funny limerick, all before breakfast.  (Poems Quotes) On a very personal level, I have fond memories of spending a lot of time in the Library of Congress working on my collection of poems ‘Native Guard.’ I was there over a summer doing research in the archives and then writing in the reading room at the Jefferson building.  (Poems Quotes) When you begin to write poems because you love language, because you love poetry. Something happens that makes you write poems. And the writing of poems is incredibly pleasurable and addictive.  (Poems Quotes) I can’t think of a case where poems changed the world, but what they do is they change people’s understanding of what’s going on in the world.  (Poems Quotes) I’m much more capable of cutting back than of expanding. I’ve gotten very surgical about poems.  (Poems Quotes) I grew up around poets and novelists and my dad wrote poems about everything - from a cat sleeping in a window to a car wreck he passed on the highway. I learned not to censor myself: that was one of things I learned in my apprenticeship, my creative-writing apprenticeship with my dad.  (Poems Quotes) Even when writing your own poems, you need to talk to people; you need to magpie around, getting words and things. I’m very against the celebrity culture that wants to say: ‘this is a genius, this is one person who has done something brilliant.’ There are always a hundred people in the background who have helped to make it.  (Poems Quotes) My favorite subject was English or creative writing. We did poems and making a magazine, and I did one on celebrities. I called it ‘Celebrity Life Magazine.’ I interviewed my good friend Kaley Cuoco.  (Poems Quotes) Celebrating historic triumphs is a favorite pastime for many Turks. Tales of how Turkic peoples emerged from Central Asia, crossed the steppes to Anatolia, established the Ottoman Empire and ruled for centuries over large swaths of Europe and Asia are the subject of countless legends, poems and books.  (Poems Quotes) I wrote poems and an essay about that weird language. We still remember it to a certain extent, and it still comes up when we’re all together. It’s so fundamental to how I think.  (Poems Quotes) Everyone’s taste is different. But I think the best way to defend against regrets after opening night is to try your best to tell the story you want to tell. In terms of smaller changes over time, I think good plays are like poems. Every syllable counts.  (Poems Quotes) Poetry is a lousy form of activism; it doesn’t really change much. And maybe we can point to one or two historical times when a poem has started a revolution or a rebellion or an uprising, but it doesn’t happen that often, and if you put the number of poems next to the number of political acts, it would be pretty slim.  (Poems Quotes) Poetry had great powers over me from my childhood, and today the poems live in my memory which I read at the age of 7 or 8 years and which drove me to desperate attempts at imitation.  (Poems Quotes) Samuel Marshak was one of the founders of modern Russian children’s literature. Soviet children used to know his poems by heart, but only since glasnost have American editors shown any interest in issuing his poems here.  (Poems Quotes) You never forget the books you loved as a kid. You never forget the poems you memorized, the first book you read until the cover fell off, the book you read hidden from your mother. What an honor to hold hands with a child’s imagination in this way.  (Poems Quotes) My advice to my younger self would have been, Chill. Concentrate on the poems. Everything else will work itself out.  (Poems Quotes)
