Text Quotes
My first songs were about animals and shoes. I wrote one song about PF Flyers, and one to my fish.  (Wrote Quotes) The first song I wrote was called ‘You,’ and it was a love song about somebody who didn’t even exist.  (Wrote Quotes) I wrote my first song, ‘Conversion’, to this little hip-hop instrumental. I went to an open-mic, plugged my iPod into the P.A., and sang over the beat.  (Wrote Quotes) Shotgun’s one of the first songs I ever wrote. It’s about a couple I met at Waffle House, an all night diner I used to hang at before I could go to bars.  (Wrote Quotes) The first set of lyrics for the first songs I ever wrote, which are the ones on ‘Pretty Hate Machine,’ came from private journal entries that I realized I was writing in lyric form.  (Wrote Quotes) There’s a song called ‘All We’d Ever Need,’ which is actually the first song that the three of us wrote together on our first album, and when we wrote that song I didn’t have any real experience to pull from.  (Wrote Quotes) I’d say the key thing is to remain true to what originally got you into music. When I wrote ‘Hallelujah,’ it ignited me to do music because of the love and joy that I got from writing that song. Down the road, you get all of these opinions from people; just remember what got you started in the first place.  (Wrote Quotes) I was probably 35 when I wrote the first story. The voice is kind of a mix in that it has a young voice, but it’s also someone who’s looking back. I like that kind of double vision.  (Wrote Quotes) Speaking of [Philip] Larkin, in his poem about the First World War he wrote something like, Never such innocence, before or since, that turned itself to past without a word.  (Wrote Quotes) I’d found that what I wrote and put out on records somehow was not fitting into how I perform on stage.  (Wrote Quotes) The other week I wrote a piece on a photograph I got at a flea market, and I got about 70 hits. I think a lot of people must be interested in flea markets.  (Wrote Quotes) Modern scientific knowledge appeared piecemeal. Historians wrote about human history; physicists tackled the material world; and biologists studied the world of living organisms. But there were few links between these disciplines, as researchers focused on getting the details right.  (Wrote Quotes) And that’s why I wrote the book, because our country really needs to understand, if people in this nation understood what our foreign policy is really about, what foreign aid is about, how our corporations work, where our tax money goes, I know we will demand change.  (Wrote Quotes) I began writing when I was still in the British Foreign Service, and it was then understood that even if you wrote about butterfly collecting, you used another name.  (Wrote Quotes) Woke the next day and found her note. Love ya, goodbye, that’s all she wrote.  (Wrote Quotes) The founding father of Albanian literature is the nineteenth-century writer Naim Frasheri. Without having the greatness of Dante or Shakespeare, he is nonetheless the founder, the emblematic character. He wrote long epic poems, as well as lyrical poetry, to awaken the national consciousness of Albania.  (Wrote Quotes) There’s not much a newspaper reporter can do about dead men. But a newspaper reporter and a cop and a judge can deliver some justice. That’s why the founding fathers wrote it up the way they did, I suppose. Life. Liberty. Pursuit of happiness. Everyone is entitled to those things.  (Wrote Quotes) I’ve been writing since I was about thirteen but didn’t start a book until 2007. I spent four years writing a sci-fi novel before I wrote ‘The Bone Season’ at nineteen.  (Wrote Quotes) We’ve always been a band who’s taken forever to do things. After writing ‘Persona’ I think we wrote about four songs in three years!  (Wrote Quotes) People like Frank Zappa and Bryan Ferry knew we could pick and choose from the history of music, stick things together looking for friction and energy. They were more like playwrights; they invented characters and wrote a life around them.  (Wrote Quotes) I originally wrote ‘The Martian’ as a free serial novel, posting one chapter at a time to my website.  (Wrote Quotes) If anything qualifies as an irony of history it would be this: that Marx and Engels throughout the nineteenth century wrote about America the United States as the great country of the future, of freedom and equality and a good life for the working man, and a country of revolution and emancipation, and of Russia as the great country of despotism, backwardness, savagery and superstition.  (Wrote Quotes) I think what it means to be an ‘American Girl,’ and what I wrote the song about, is our freedoms. The idea that we as Americans can be what we want to be and say what we want to say and that we take it for granted.  (Wrote Quotes) For a writer, personal freedom is not so important. It is not individual freedom that guarantees the greatness of literature; otherwise, writers in democratic countries would be superior to all others. Some of the greatest writers wrote under dictatorship - Shakespeare, Cervantes.  (Wrote Quotes) It is true, as Sartre once wrote, referring to French Army atrocities in Algeria, that the real tragedy in our time is that any of us can be, interchangeably, victim or torturer.  (Wrote Quotes) To achieve the very pinnacle of good taste, the neoclassicists wrote their plays entirely in alexandrine verse, a rarefied meter that is uniquely tailored to the French language and fits no other.  (Wrote Quotes) When I wrote about the French Revolution, I didn’t choose to write about aristocrats; I chose characters who began their lives in provincial obscurity.  (Wrote Quotes) David Sedaris wrote in one of his books that people like to make children into little grown-ups, which to him is about as funny as a dog in sunglasses.  (Wrote Quotes) I would love to interview Michael McKean and his wife, who wrote the songs for ‘A Mighty Wind,’ which is my favorite Christopher Guest movie. I’m just a sucker for any funny guy that has a wife who is intelligent and that he collaborates with.  (Wrote Quotes) I look out at the stadiums full of people and see them all knowing the words to songs I wrote. And curling their hair! I remember straightening my hair because I wanted to be like everybody else, and now the fact that anybody would emulate what I do? It’s just funny. And wonderful.  (Wrote Quotes)
