Text Quotes
It’s great that there are so many different kinds of books for kids and adults to choose from. I think an eclectic reader is the best kind of reader to be, which would be why I was always so satisfied to hear that kids read the Baby-Sitters Club books and then went on and discovered other authors and other genres  (Reader Quotes) Corrupt fantasy points us, or forms us, in a consciousness that can lead to thinking that evil is good and good is evil. In the worst case, this may have long range effects, prompting the reader intuitively, subconsciously, to do evil while thinking they’re doing good  (Reader Quotes) In Victorian fiction, there would be a chapter at the end devoted to righting all of the wrongs. I thought to right all of the wrongs would be too glib. I thought it would be better to lull the reader into thinking that is the way it would work, but then not to do that  (Reader Quotes) I was not a comic book reader, but my son is. My son wasn’t really interested in reading books, which was hard for me because I love to read. It just didn’t come naturally to my boy. So we kind of found comic books because they were fascinating to him. They were great stories  (Reader Quotes) As a writer of criticism, the consumer thing is the least interesting thing, but as a critic, the single worst thing you can do is send a reader to waste time and money on something - even if it’s something you personally love. You have to indicate the reasons why you love it and they’ll hate it  (Reader Quotes) It sounds schmaltzy to say, but fiction is much more to do with love than people admit or acknowledge. The novelist has to not only love his characters - which you do, without even thinking about it, just as you love your children. But also to love the reader, and that’s what I mean by the pleasure principle  (Reader Quotes) We didn’t want to dilute or soften the material because that would really be irresponsible, in its own way. The [Hunger Games] books are very intense and very demanding of the reader, and the movie should be that too  (Reader Quotes) My objective always is to stay as close as possible and shoot the pictures as if through the eyes of the infantryman, the Marine, or the pilot. I wanted to give the reader something of the visual perspective and feeling of the guy under fire, his apprehensions and sufferings, his tensions and releases, his behavior in the presence of threatening death  (Reader Quotes) Slothful, feeble, pretentious, pedantic, elitist - these are some of the epithets that eventually become associated with the absent minded scholar, the poor sighted reader, the book worm, the nerd  (Reader Quotes) The fundamental difference between the mystery story and the ghost story is the fact that a mystery demands a solution for its effectiveness; a ghost story is necessarily unsolvable; the reader must be willing to accept the fact that nothing is proved  (Reader Quotes) The act of reading will enrich your life.Become a lifelong learner and a reader  (Reader Quotes) The act of writing... is the act of trying to understand why my opinion is what it is. And ultimately, I think that’s the same experience the reader has when they pick up one of my books  (Reader Quotes) I think that reading is always active. As a writer, you can only go so far; the reader meets you halfway, bringing his or her own experience to bear on everything you’ve written. What I mean is that it is not only the writer’s memory that filters experience, but the reader’s as well.  (Reader Quotes) A savage review is much more entertaining for the reader than an admiring one; the little misanthrope in each of us relishes the rubbishing of someone else.  (Reader Quotes) It wasn’t until I was an adult reader that I began to fathom the influence of fairy tales on writers I was in love with over the years, from Louisa May Alcott to Bernard Malamud to John Cheever to Anne Frank to Joy Williams.  (Reader Quotes) I spent many years in grad school in English, so I’ve read a lot in a variety of genres. But adventure fantasy is my bread and butter as a reader, and probably always will be. So it’s only natural that I came to that genre as a writer.  (Reader Quotes) I think the reason I’m a writer is because first, I was a reader. I loved to read. I read a lot of adventure stories and mystery books, and I have wonderful memories of my mom reading picture books aloud to me. I learned that words are powerful.  (Reader Quotes) My breakthrough as a reader was when I discovered the European adventure story writers - Alexander Dumas, Robert Louis Stevenson, Sir Walter Scott, to name a few.  (Reader Quotes) Aesthetics - rather than reason - shapes our thought processes. First comes aesthetics, then logic. ‘Thinking in Numbers’ is not about an attempt to impress the reader but to include the reader, draw the reader in, by explaining my experiences - the beauty I feel in a prime number, for example.  (Reader Quotes) If any reader has lost a loved one or is afraid of death, modern physics says: ‘Be comforted, you and they shall live again.’  (Reader Quotes) The object is very clear in the fight against racism; you have reasons why you’re opposed to it. But when you’re writing a novel, you don’t want the reader to come out of it voting yes or no to some question. Life is more complicated than that.  (Reader Quotes) Making things difficult for the reader is less an attack on the reader than it is on the age and its facile knowledge-market.  (Reader Quotes) History is my passion. So I write what I love to read. I find that if I combine history with a strong, sensual romance, it is like a one-two punch. The reader doesn’t want the history without the romance, and of course the heavier the history, the more it has to be leavened with a sensual, all-consuming love story.  (Reader Quotes) Writing in a nuanced way, getting at all the details in a way that remains interesting for the reader, is very difficult.  (Reader Quotes) I always feel it is a shortcoming of mine as a reader and as a writer that I frankly need to like somebody.  (Reader Quotes) One of the reasons poetry is such an amazing genre to work with is because it constantly reinvents itself and re-negotiates its terms with the reader.  (Reader Quotes) [Mark] Twain is pointing at you. You, the reader of the book one hundred and thirty years ago and today. That is what has made it a great American novel and the most widely read book in American Literature around the world today.  (Reader Quotes) I think there’s no excuse for the American poetry reader not knowing a good deal about what is going on in the rest of the world.  (Reader Quotes) A writer draws a road map where readers walks with their love, joy, anger, tears, and dismay. Every story, every poem, has different meanings for every reader.  (Reader Quotes) You have to be an extremely good reader to appreciate what a good writer is. There are some people who are completely insensitive to good writing.  (Reader Quotes)
