Text Quotes
There is something I keep wanting to say about reading short stories. I am doing it now, because I many never have another occasion. Stories are not chapters of novels. They should not be read one after another, as if they were meant to follow along. Read one. Shut the book. Read something else. Come back later. Stories can wait  (Novels Quotes) I believe that people should write biographies only about people they love, or understand, or both. Novels, on the other hand, are often better if they’re about people the writer doesn’t like very much  (Novels Quotes) Once outside the magic circle the writers became their lonely selves, pondering on poems, observing their fellow men ruthlessly, putting people they knew into novels; no wonder they were without friends  (Novels Quotes) Approach your lives as if they were novels, with their own heroes, villains, red herrings, and triumphs  (Novels Quotes) The romance genre is the only genre where readers are guaranteed novels that place the heroine at the heart of the story. These are books that celebrate women’s heroic virtues and values: courage, honor, determination and a belief in the healing power of love  (Novels Quotes) The novel as a form is usually seen to be moral if its readers consider freedom, individuality, democracy, privacy, social connection, tolerance and hope to be morally good, but it is not considered moral if the highest values of a society are adherence to rules and traditional mores, the maintenance of hierarchical relationships, and absolute ideas of right and wrong. Any society based on the latter will find novels inherently immoral and subversive  (Novels Quotes) I write novels about ordinary women who face seemingly insurmountable odds but through courage and determination find their heart’s desire  (Novels Quotes) Good novels are not written, they are rewritten. Great novels are diamonds mined from layered rewrites  (Novels Quotes) It did not take long after the rise of the commercial printing press before someone figured out that erotic novels were a good idea... It took people another 150 years to even think of the scientific journal  (Novels Quotes) In two novels written forty years apart, a man and a woman tell stories of their love... Taken together they provide an unusually touching story of young love unable to prevail against an opposition whose strength was tragically buttressed by the uncertainties of a cultural divide  (Novels Quotes) We read novels because we need stories; we crave them; we can’t live without telling them and hearing them. Stories are how we make sense of our lives and of the world. When we’re distressed and go to therapy, our therapist’s job is to help us tell our story. Life doesn’t come with plots; it’s messy and chaotic; life is one damn, inexplicable thing after another. And we can’t have that. We insist on meaning. And so we tell stories so that our lives make sense  (Novels Quotes) I never plan my novels because if I know what is going to happen, it bores me rigid. I let the story tell itself  (Novels Quotes) We all have a lot of people inside us, yet we get to live only one life. Fiction lets us slip into someone else’s skin, so to speak. That’s why we read novels, and also why we write them–to experience more life  (Novels Quotes) I can’t believe that people really prefer to go to the concert hall under intellectually trying, socially trying, physically trying conditions, unable to repeat something they have missed, when they can sit at home under the most comfortable and stimulating circumstances and hear it as they want to hear it. I can’t imagine what would happen to literature today if one were obliged to congregate in an unpleasant hall and read novels projected on a screen  (Novels Quotes) Architecture is a discipline that takes time and patience. If one spends enough years writing complex novels one might be able, someday, to construct a respectable haiku  (Novels Quotes) Novels do take charge of the writer, and the writer is basically a kind of sheepdog just trying to keep things on track  (Novels Quotes) Even with the sacred printing press, we got erotic novels 150 years before we got scientific journals  (Novels Quotes) I calmed myself by walking into my nearby bookstore and marveling at all the books other people had written. So many people had finished and published novels; it couldn’t be so hard, right?  (Novels Quotes) It is perfectly legitimate to write novels which are essentially prose poems, but in the end, I think, a novel is like a car, and if you buy a car and grow flowers in it, you’re forgetting that the car is designed to take you somewhere else  (Novels Quotes) Writers of novels live in a strange world where what’s made up is as important as what’s real  (Novels Quotes) I do not share the pessimism of the age about the novel. They are one of our greatest spiritual, aesthetic and intellectual inventions. As a species it is story that distinguishes us, and one of the supreme expressions of story is the novel. Novels are not content. Nor are they are a mirror to life or an explanation of life or a guide to life. Novels are life, or they are nothing  (Novels Quotes) My novels and poems are meant to be read aloud. That’s why jazz musicians have been able to adapt my stuff  (Novels Quotes) My evolution into becoming a photojournalist started with falling in love with literature when I was a teenager, falling in love with novels and imagining a life of being a storyteller  (Novels Quotes) Art, a book, a painting, a song, can definitely inspire change, whether it’s a small change or a big change but you know there’s novels I’ve read or a scene in a film that I’ve seen where I definitely inspired something and made a change or addressed an issue in my life or done something cliche like make a phone call  (Novels Quotes) There’re no novels that I like to read so I write my own novels, and then I read them again, and it’s the best thing  (Novels Quotes) In my contemporary stories, I write about today’s quilters, inventive techniques they use, and how technology has influenced their art. Novels set in the past let me have fun researching patterns that were popular and fabrics and tools available to quilters through history  (Novels Quotes) Now the novels that are read are purely entertainment – well done, very polished, with a very effective technique – but not literature, just entertainment  (Novels Quotes) I feel like it’s hard to get into historical novels where you know what the story is far too well  (Novels Quotes) I read what I like to write: romantic suspense. I also love thrillers and novels of suspense, but I can’t handle extreme violence and torture  (Novels Quotes) One good reason for writing novels based on your life is that you have something to read in old age when you’ve forgotten what happened  (Novels Quotes)
