Text Quotes
I am a writer, which means I write stories, I write novels, and I would write poetry if I knew how to. I don’t want to limit myself  (Novels Quotes) I started realising that the themes running through all of my novels were really haunting and obsessing me about my own life  (Novels Quotes) I’ve tried very hard and I’ve never found any resemblance between the people I know and the people in my novels  (Novels Quotes) I envy those writers who outline their novels, who know where they’re going. But I find writing is a process of discovery  (Novels Quotes) Notice how every science fiction movie or television show starts with a shot of the location where the story is about to occur. Movies that take place in outer space always start with a shot of stars and a starship. Movies that take place on another world always start with a shot of that planet. This is to let you know where you are. Novels and stories start the same way. You have to give the reader a sense of where he is and what’s happening as quickly as possible. You don’t want to start the story by confusing the reader  (Novels Quotes) I once had an editor advise me, as I was revising one of my early novels, to add more characters. I played around with the idea. As soon as I’d decided a few fresh faces and give them something to do, I realized that what my editor had really asked for was more plot. Ding. More characters equals more action  (Novels Quotes) The great thing about novels is that you can be as unshy as you want to be. I’m very polite in person. I don’t want to talk about startling or upsetting things with people  (Novels Quotes) Novels aren’t pedagogical instruments, or instructions in law or physics or any other discipline. A novel has to be an emotional experience, a trip of the imagination, and because science has raised so many issues that concern and affect humans, it’s a good starting place for me  (Novels Quotes) Almost all novels are improved by cutting from the top. On their first pages, authors parade those favourite effects which disgust the impartial reader  (Novels Quotes) Novels, in my experience, are slow in coming, and once I’ve begun them I know I have years rather than months of work ahead of me  (Novels Quotes) There are these boutique writers out there who think if they are not writing their novels sitting at a bistro with their laptops, then they’re not real writers. That’s ridiculous  (Novels Quotes) I think of my books now as suspense novels, usually with a love story incorporated. They’re absolutely a lot harder to write than romances. They take more plotting and real character development  (Novels Quotes) I try to write about things, places, events, and phenomena I know about personally. That helps make the novels more genuine  (Novels Quotes) For me, writing never gets easier. It’s always hard work. It doesn’t matter how many words you wrote the day before, or how many novels you’ve completed in the last decade: every day you start fresh again with that same blank page, or that same blank screen  (Novels Quotes) I entered a poem in a poetry contest around 1987, and the poem won and I received $1,000 for it. That made me realize that maybe what I was writing was worth reading to people. After that, for some reason, I turned to novels and I’ve written mainly novels ever since  (Novels Quotes) Novels are a kind of experiment in selfhood, for the reader as well as for the author  (Novels Quotes) I’d like to think that my films are personal enough to exist without hearkening back to their respective novels  (Novels Quotes) I have always loved to read, and now that I have penned 10 novels and a few magazine articles, I have fallen seriously in love with writing stories and seeing them go out into the world. It’s magical, you know?  (Novels Quotes) I’ve always been a little bit more of a novel reader than a short story reader. I think the first books that made me want to be a writer were novels  (Novels Quotes) I like to believe my suspense novels marry the strong characters from my romance writing past, with the twisty, clever plots of my mystery writing present  (Novels Quotes) I still read romance, and I read suspense. I read them both. And part of it is, I like stories with strong characters, and I like stories where there’s closure at the end. And I like stories where there’s hope. That’s a kind of empowerment. I think romance novels are very empowering, and I think suspense novels are, too  (Novels Quotes) If I did only one thing at a time I’d think I was wasting my time. If, for example, I only wrote novels I would feel like a charlatan and a fraud  (Novels Quotes) Most novels I come across have all the excitement of a long trip on a bus with a sensitive glee club. Yammer and chat  (Novels Quotes) I love writing journalism because it’s all over in two hours and comes straight off the top of the head. Writing novels is soooooo much harder. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done  (Novels Quotes) Certainly I’m still mining my experiences as a journalist. I think it’s no coincidence that all three of my novels basically are about how people act in a time of catastrophe. Do they go to their best self or their worst self?  (Novels Quotes) I grew up in a community where it was not the exception to be a good girl. It was sort of expected. And all of my friends were good girls too, and my boyfriends were good boys. Everybody was pretty nice. And that affects how I write my characters. There aren’t very many bad guys in my novels  (Novels Quotes) I have to say that movies have as much impact on me as music. And that I learned as much about narrative from movies as I did from reading novels, how to arrange stories, how to juxtapose things  (Novels Quotes) I consciously try to end my novels at a point where I won’t have to wonder about my characters ever again  (Novels Quotes) Novels are written, not wished into existence. You have to sit your ass in the chair or nothing gets done  (Novels Quotes) Dialogue that is written in dialect is very tiring to read. If you can do it brilliantly, fine. If other writers read your work and rave about your use of dialect, go for it. But be positive that you do it well, because otherwise it is a lot of work to read short stories or novels that are written in dialect. It makes our necks feel funny  (Novels Quotes)
