Text Quotes
Writing anything is terribly hard but, alas for me, because I am addicted, a heck of a lot of fun. I often am sorry I ever started writing prose, because it is so hard. But I can’t stop  (Prose Quotes) There are a lot of editorials that have nothing to do with anything like that. But I was just thinking of that sense of prose as being very responsible and perceptive, thoughtful, intimate, and contriving a quote statement  (Prose Quotes) A prose writer gets tired of writing prose, and wants to be a poet. So he begins every line with a capital letter, and keeps on writing prose  (Prose Quotes) I spend eight months outlining and researching the novel before I begin to write a single word of the prose  (Prose Quotes) When I put together a graphic novel, I don’t think about literary prose. I think about storytelling  (Prose Quotes) He can develop sense and style, in the manner of distinguished modern prose, in which event he may be sure that the result will not fall into any objective form  (Prose Quotes) When critics are waiting to pounce upon poetic style on exactly the same grounds as if it were prose, the poets tremble  (Prose Quotes) Next to the writer of real estate advertisements, the autobiographer is the most suspect of prose artists  (Prose Quotes) The human brain can soften as a result of incessant listening to music with an intent to commit prose  (Prose Quotes) A poet or prose narrator usually looks back on what he has achieved against a backdrop of the years that have passed, generally finding that some of these achievements are acceptable, while others are less so  (Prose Quotes) The most important tribute any human being can pay to a poem or a piece of prose he or she really loves is to learn it by heart. Not by brain, by heart; the expression is vital  (Prose Quotes) A great actor is independent of the poet, because the supreme essence of feeling does not reside in prose or in verse, but in the accent with which it is delivered  (Prose Quotes) I have to say from the outset that not all prose can be transferred to the screen  (Prose Quotes) When you finish a poem, it clicks shut like the top of a jewel box, but prose is endless. I haven’t experienced an awful lot of clicking shut!  (Prose Quotes) I have always tended toward a lush prose style, but I take care to modulate it from story to story and to strip it down entirely when necessary  (Prose Quotes) I would never write realistic prose. I don’t like people who try to write in a poetic style, but in the course of their book abandon it for realism, and weave back and forth like drunkards between the surreal and the real  (Prose Quotes) Prose is when all the lines except the last go on to the end. Poetry is when some of them fall short of it  (Prose Quotes) Poetry is halfway between prose and music: it is sometimes like an intimate conversation, in words and phrases which need not be fully uttered, and sometimes like dancing and wordless music  (Prose Quotes) How often might a man, after he had jumbled a set of letters in a bag, fling them out upon the ground before they would fall into an exact poem, yea, or so much as make a good discourse in prose? And may not a little book be as easily made by chance as this great volume of the world?  (Prose Quotes) Writing for the page is only one form of writing for the eye. Wherever solemn inscriptions are put up in public places, there is a sense that the site and the occasion demand a form of writing which goes beyond plain informative prose. Each word is so valued that the letters forming it are seen as objects of solemn beauty  (Prose Quotes) If you have a good story idea, don’t assume it must form a prose narrative. It may work better as a play, a screenplay or a poem. Be flexible  (Prose Quotes) Fiction isn’t made by scraping the bones of topicality for the last shreds and sinews, to be processed into mechanically recovered prose. Like journalism, it deals in ideas as well as facts, but also in metaphors, symbols and myths  (Prose Quotes) See how weak prose is... Presently I shall go to a bar and there one or two poets will speak to me and I to them and we will try to destroy each other or attract each other and nothing will happen because we will be speaking in prose  (Prose Quotes) People often ask me why my style is so simple. It is, in fact, deceptively simple, for no two sentences are alike. It is clarity that I am striving to attain, not simplicity. Of course, some people want literature to be difficult and there are writers who like to make their readers toil and sweat. They hope to be taken more seriously that way. I have always tried to achieve a prose that is easy and conversational. And those who think this is simple should try it for themselves  (Prose Quotes) Anyone who doubts that caffeine is a drug should read some of the prose composed under its influence  (Prose Quotes) Bookish people, who are often maladroit people, persist in thinking they can master any subtlety so long as it’s been shaped into acceptable expository prose  (Prose Quotes) I can’t be expected to produce deathless prose in an atmosphere of gloom and eucalyptus  (Prose Quotes) Marriage is a book of which the first chapter is written in poetry and the remaining chapters in prose  (Prose Quotes) In science there is a dictum: don’t add an experiment to an experiment. Don’t make things unnecessarily complicated. In writing fiction, the more fantastic the tale, the plainer the prose should be. Don’t ask your readers to admire your words when you want them to believe your story  (Prose Quotes) In the big picture I write for an audience of people I’ve never met. By the final draft I’m looking for anything in the prose that’s prospectively boring to strangers  (Prose Quotes)
