Text Quotes
Reviewers have called my books ‘novels in verse.’ I think of them as written in prose, but I do use stanzas. Stanza means ‘room’ in Latin, and I wanted there to be ‘room’ - breathing opportunities to receive thoughts and have time to come out of them before starting again at the left margin.  (Prose Quotes) To hell with reality! I want to die in music, not in reason or in prose. People don’t deserve the restraint we show by not going into delirium in front of them. To hell with them!  (Prose Quotes) I’m a failed poet. Reading poetry helps me to see the world differently, and I try to infuse my prose with figurative language, which goes against the trend in fiction.  (Prose Quotes) When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again  (Prose Quotes) Being incomprehensible offers unparalleled protection against having nothing to say... but writing with simplicity requires courage, for there is a danger that one will be overlooked, dismissed as simpleminded by those with a tenacious belief that the impassable prose is a hallmark of intelligence  (Prose Quotes) What I’m constantly striving for in my prose is clarity. So that, ideally, the writing will become so transparent that the reader will forget that the medium of communication is language  (Prose Quotes) Polishing: a useful lesson for the hopeful writer. You say your tormented prose doesn’t read as well as mine? Neither does mine, at first!  (Prose Quotes) Polyphonic prose is a kind of free verse, except that it is still freer. Polyphonic makes full use of cadence, rime, alliteration, assonance  (Prose Quotes) I’m a failed poet. Reading poetry helps me to see the world differently, and I try to infuse my prose with figurative language, which goes against the trend in fiction  (Prose Quotes) My preference is for prose with more silence in it, language that contains more pockets of strangeness  (Prose Quotes) It is not a waste to write beautiful prose or poetry for one person’s eyes alone!  (Prose Quotes) I always say that a poet loves the world, and the prose writer needs to create an alternative world  (Prose Quotes) Because, if one is writing novels today, concentrating on the beauty of the prose is right up there with concentrating on your semi-colons, for wasted effort  (Prose Quotes)
