Text Quotes
When I started writing, there was nothing about zombies. It was all teen movies, which to me are scarier than zombies, but that’s another story  (Writing Quotes) My writing is progressing slowly, but at least it’s moving forward. I’m sure that’s the case. The only problem is that I’m never absolutely certain that what I’ve written is any good  (Writing Quotes) The simile has to match the tone of its surroundings and has to be like a little joke. Writing a simile that isn’t funny on some level is quite hard  (Writing Quotes) I was always determined that one way or another I would force a book on the world, even if I had to resort to writing one about a tabby cat who solves mysteries  (Writing Quotes) Plot is tremendously important to me: I can’t stand books where nothing happens, and I can’t imagine ever writing a novel without at least one murder  (Writing Quotes) Life isn’t so complicated for children. They have more time to think about the really important things. That’s why I occasionally moralise in my children’s books in a way I wouldn’t dare when writing for adults  (Writing Quotes) I don’t think there’s a difference between writing for a newspaper or magazine and doing a chapter in a book  (Writing Quotes) There are these boutique writers out there who think if they are not writing their novels sitting at a bistro with their laptops, then they’re not real writers. That’s ridiculous  (Writing Quotes) I am, in some sense, a writer. Even though I kinda downplay the word thing, I do enjoy writing sometimes  (Writing Quotes) The idea of writing songs because you’re depressed and you need to communicate it somehow, that isn’t really true for me  (Writing Quotes) I think growing up in a small town, the kind of people I met in my small town, they still haunt me. I find myself writing about them over and over again  (Writing Quotes) I was 22 and stopped writing plays, and I didn’t start again until I was 25. I was writing badly. In college, I attempted to write these more conventional plays, but the theater I loved was downtown experimental theater. I didn’t feel like I could do that either. It didn’t occur to me to do my own thing  (Writing Quotes) Arizona, our beautiful state, was built on mining. Copper is huge here, and now uranium. And then we have the federal government coming in, writing all these rules and regulations and telling us that we can’t do this and we can’t do that. We need concise, clear answers  (Writing Quotes) And I’ve always loved commercials. I like working out how to organically weave a brand’s message into the writing process. It’s like an improv show, where comics ask the audience to throw out a word and a skit is built around it  (Writing Quotes) I want to be remembered as an actor who put in some good work in the beginning of his career, even better work at the end of his career and slowly, successfully made the transition into writing and directing  (Writing Quotes) Writing is my obsession, my passion. My relationship with it is one of the most complex and agonizing and richly vexing that I have in my life  (Writing Quotes) I didn’t start writing so that I could more deeply know myself. I was bored of myself, my life, my childhood, my hometown. I started writing as a way to know others, to get away from myself  (Writing Quotes) My younger brother and I have been writing together, mainly for fun, for years, but we’ve been improvising together since we were kids. Literally  (Writing Quotes) Fame, money and the size of the market are not very important to me. What is, is writing a book that is worth doing and then publishing it. I don’t write books for entertainment, for people to pass the time then throw away  (Writing Quotes) I do think that something of the effect I have on people is to put everything on an edge where they’re both infatuated with a kind of charmingness happening in the person or in the writing, and also flatly terrified by a revelation or acceptance of revelation that’s almost happening, never quite totally happening  (Writing Quotes) Maybe I could have been good as a drawer if I had done it as much as I did writing, but it’s more scary to draw. It’s more revealing. You can’t disguise yourself in drawing  (Writing Quotes) I’m always determined that as a novelist I’m going to go out there and research my characters very thoroughly before I start writing  (Writing Quotes) I have to be involved. Whether it’s me writing by myself or with other people, I definitely want to have my hand in the creative process. That’s part of why I got into music in the first place  (Writing Quotes) As far as writing, it’s grown because I’ve really grown comfortable with who I am  (Writing Quotes) When I feel like every day when I get up I’m writing songs, that’s the time to make a record  (Writing Quotes) So, whenever I’m writing, I’m writing in the presence of all the other books I’ve read and I think we all are  (Writing Quotes) Choosing writing as a career, just by itself, is a measure of not being a calculating person  (Writing Quotes) The funny thing about writing is I think a lot of people assume that you’re sitting in a garret with a quill pen for hour after hour  (Writing Quotes) Writing on your own is, in a way, a very lonely profession. There’s no one there to help you  (Writing Quotes) For me, writing never gets easier. It’s always hard work. It doesn’t matter how many words you wrote the day before, or how many novels you’ve completed in the last decade: every day you start fresh again with that same blank page, or that same blank screen  (Writing Quotes)
