Text Quotes
I think writing is really a process of communication... It’s the sense of being in contact with people who are part of a particular audience that really makes a difference to me in writing  (Writing Quotes) Writing is not magic. It’s a craft, a process, a set of steps. As with any process, things sometimes break down. Even in a good story, the writer runs into problems. So the act of writing always includes problem solving  (Writing Quotes) Don’t say you were a bit confused and sort of tired and a little depressed and somewhat annoyed. Be tired. Be confused. Be depressed. Be annoyed. Don’t hedge your prose with little timidities. Good writing is lean and confident  (Writing Quotes) When I am asked how I began writing poems, I talk about the indifference of nature  (Writing Quotes) I don’t separate writing songs from poetry and short fiction. In the area where I work in my house, there’s a word processor and a guitar  (Writing Quotes) Before I even knew what that half of my family did, I was interested in performing. I remember being seven years old and up on a stage and loving it. I’ve always adored it. Not just acting, but the whole process of writing and directing movies, everything that has to do with that part of life. Maybe it’s in my blood  (Writing Quotes) Whenever you think you’re writing what other people want to hear from you, and that it’ll be commercial, you’re doomed to disaster. Writing has to be as truthful and specific as we can make it. The minute we think that we’re reaching more people and pleasing them, we get general. And audiences sense that and turn away, shun us  (Writing Quotes) I love to play with language; make it do tricks, turn a word inside out to see if it’s got a hidden meaning tucked away somewhere, or perhaps find that it’s capable of an extra entendre or two... Plotting is nothing I did, or do, naturally. It is the hardest part of the writing process. No matter how many times you plot a script successfully, the next one, representing new and uncharted territory, convinces you that you really don’t know how to do it at all  (Writing Quotes) Write plays that matter. Raise the stakes. Shout, yell, holler, but make yourself heard. It’s time for playwrights to reclaim the theatre. We do that by speaking from the heart about the things that matter most to us. If a play isn’t worth dying for, maybe it isn’t worth writing  (Writing Quotes) I had no agenda in writing this play except expressing myself... It later occurred to me that I was not only announcing things to my family; I was announcing it to the world. Of course, if the play had been a flop, only my family would have known  (Writing Quotes) The writing in mathematics text is not only laconic to a fault; it is cold, monotonous, dry, dull, and even ungrammatical... The books are not only printed by machines; they are written by machines  (Writing Quotes) Most of us live for the critic, and he lives on us. He doesn’t sacrifice himself. He gets so much a line for writing a criticism. If the birds should read the newspapers, they would all take to changing their notes. The parrots would exchange with the nightingales, and what a farce it would be!  (Writing Quotes) I got a lot of flak originally for writing with photographs, because the great cliche in photography is that one photograph is worth a thousand words, and photographers are usually dodo birds anyway  (Writing Quotes) It’s often about the simple things, isn’t it? Painting and photography are first about seeing, they say. Writing is about observing. Technique is secondary. Sometimes the simple is the most difficult  (Writing Quotes) The writing is the springboard for your intuitive stuff and then you see, maybe a colour of what you want to achieve. Then you bring in the technique you’ve learnt. But when you’re on film, you’re not always in control of that. That’s what makes me believe in a kind of collective unconscious, a sort of experience you draw on  (Writing Quotes) I do what I want to do. I see where my enthusiasm is. Over the years, my techniques expanded. That’s how the writing came out  (Writing Quotes) I have acting technique; I have singing technique; I don’t have a writing technique to fall back on  (Writing Quotes) It is the narrow, hidden tracks that lead back to our lost homeland, what contains the solution to the last mysteries is not the ugly scar that life’s rasp leaves on us, but the fine, almost invisible writing that is engraved on our body  (Writing Quotes) A creative writing program is only as good as its teachers, and I was fortunate in having two great writers as mentors  (Writing Quotes) That’s the beauty of song writing. You never know when inspiration will come or how it will hit, you just gotta kinda grasp a hold of it and make sense of it somehow  (Writing Quotes) The fact is that writing, like any creative undertaking, carries with it both pain and great joy. The pain is often inherent in the most fertile subject matter; the joy lies in transforming that subject matter and thus moving through it in a way that helps us grow while we create something of value to others  (Writing Quotes) I don’t take part in texting and those other things myself, so I don’t really know if people put as much thought into messaging as they used to into writing letters  (Writing Quotes) I write in order to find out what I truly know and how I really feel about certain things. Writing requires me to go much deeper into my thoughts and memories than conversation does. Writing provides the solitude necessary to reflect on being in this world  (Writing Quotes) I’m quite private. And I never wanted to be the biggest star in the world, really. So in that sense I’ve got a good balance of doing great shows, of making an appearance every now and then and writing music, and I don’t really have to do much else  (Writing Quotes) Writing, for me, means humility. It’s a process that involves fear and doubt, especially if you’re writing honestly  (Writing Quotes) I find writing very difficult. It’s hard and it hurts sometimes, and it’s scary because of the fear of failure and the very unpleasant feeling that you may have reached the limit of your abilities  (Writing Quotes) When I’m writing a new play, there’s a period where I know I shouldn’t be out in public much. I imagine most people who create go through something like this. You willfully loosen some of the inner straps that hold your core together  (Writing Quotes) When I teach writing, I always tell my students you should assume that the audience you’re writing for is smarter than you. You can’t write if you don’t think they’re on your side, because then you start to yell at them or preach down to them  (Writing Quotes) I had a very linear story line for this particular play, and I wanted to open the piece up a bit, so I started doing that with my writing. I would describe fragments of scenes on index cards, then move the card around to see how it changed the piece  (Writing Quotes) To me, one of the greatest triumphs in doing a book is to tell the story as simply as possible. My aim is to imply rather than to overstate. Whenever the reader participates with his own interpretation, I feel that the book is much more successful. I write with the premise that less is more. Writing is not difficult to me. I read into a tape recorder, constantly dropping a word here and there from my manuscript until I get a minimum amount of words to say exactly what I want to say. Each time I drop a word or two, it brings me a sense of victory!  (Writing Quotes)
