How can the public choose sides, when one side has nothing left to surrender? Not until the right is prepared to lose on principles will we ever hope to win this culture war on which the survival of our nation depends  (War Quotes) It’s been so amazing. I’ve always struggled with this barrier that I felt like I’d had up until blogging came along. Just one comment from somebody really sparks something in me. It doesn’t need to be this huge war between me and the listeners anymore. I really thrive on that  (War Quotes) I’ve stopped war reporting. I realized that I’d answered all of my questions about war and about myself  (War Quotes) No matter how many people you kill, using a machine gun in battle is not a war crime because it does not cause unnecessary suffering; it simply performs its job horrifyingly well  (War Quotes) Let us invest less and less in war and tax cuts for the richest 1 percent, and more and more in jobs and schools for the other 99 percent  (War Quotes) There is nothing glamorous or romantic about war. It’s mostly about random pointless death and misery  (War Quotes) The idea that somebody who has done something horrible in a war is not willing to talk about it for 32 years is hardly a shocking idea. Quite the contrary  (War Quotes) For you see, the face of destiny or luck or God that gives us war also gives us other kinds of pain: the loss of health and youth; the loss of loved ones or of love; the fear that we will end our days alone. Some people suffer in peace the way others suffer in war. The special gift of that suffering, I have learned, is how to be strong while we are weak, how to be brave when we are afraid, how to be wise in the midst of confusion, and how to let go of that which we can no longer hold. In this way, anger can teach us forgiveness, hate can teach us love, and war can teach us peace  (War Quotes) I preferred the weapons of dialectic to all the other teachings of philosophy, and armed with these, I chose the conflicts of disputation rather than the trophies of war  (War Quotes) I was really interested in how marriages work, how you can, you know, be in love with somebody and spend many years with your lives intertwined, but in the end another soul can be fundamentally unknowable. And I think that the stress of war, when one party goes away and the other has to deal at home, is a really testing time in a lot of marriages  (War Quotes) War is just a racket. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of people. Only a small inside group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the masses  (War Quotes) For a great many years, as a soldier, I had a suspicion that war was a racket; not until I retired to civil life did I fully realize it  (War Quotes) I can’t envision an honest war novel that left war in a positive light  (War Quotes) The lives of prisoners of war after they are returned is almost never discussed, never explored  (War Quotes) Most of my nightmares that jolt me awake either involve the cosmos or something completely out of human control. In reality, I worry more about nuclear war, or war in general  (War Quotes) Let us wage a moral and political war against war itself, so that we can cut military spending and use that money for human needs  (War Quotes) The best battle is the battle that is never fought. The best war is the war that is won without a battle  (War Quotes) It’s so hard to go to war at home. Go to war, go home, repeat. And that is the future of warfare. Forget about remote control drones, there’s going to be remote control tanks  (War Quotes) We live in a world that is dominated by war, hate, violence and suspicion. Those are the things that come naturally in this world. So you have to will something else  (War Quotes) I often compare myself as a kid to my own grandchildren, who are around 11 and 14 now. That’s the age kids usually read my book. And I remember myself; we’d gone through a world war. My father was an army officer so I was aware of what was going on. But I wasn’t bombarded with images of catastrophe like many kids are today  (War Quotes) When we think of war, the tendency is to picture young soldiers only in their military roles. To a large extent this dehumanizes the soldiers and makes it easier for society to commit them to combat  (War Quotes) I just want people to see what I deem as a war for no reason, but only for greed  (War Quotes) I was born in 1954. My parents were brought up in the war years, and life was hard  (War Quotes) Because there could not be peace, not while two tribes shared one land. One tribe must win. Even the nailed God cannot change that truth. And I was a warrior, and in a world at war the warrior must be cruel  (War Quotes) I am not sure that you, the younger generations, will like to go to war that we went through. So, we learn as the mistakes are being committed  (War Quotes) I am an avid follower of the news, and sometimes you just can’t take any more war, any more disasters, and you want to remind yourself there’s beauty in the world. I wanted to show a more poetic side to my work. It was all about... a feeling of sadness, but in a cinematic kind of way. I find beauty in melancholy  (War Quotes) I felt then, as I feel now, that the politicians who took us to war should have been given the guns and told to settle their differences themselves, instead of organizing nothing better than legalized mass murder  (War Quotes) How many hopes and dreams are trapped within these bones? How many wonders lie never to be discovered? This is what war is. Desolation, despair and loss. There are no victors  (War Quotes) At every election, my vote goes to the candidate less likely to declare war. You’re dropping hugely expensive pieces of exploding metal on a population. America deserves the president it gets, whether the country votes for them or allows their vote to be stolen, and the least we can do is to elect someone who won’t do that to other people  (War Quotes) I always tell people, anger is like liquid. It’s fluid, it’s like water. You put it in a container and it takes the shape of that container. So many people you see in prison, unleashing war on their people, they are angry, and they take their anger and put it into a violent container  (War Quotes)
