Text Quotes
Since I was a child I’ve loved going to the opera, theatre and ballet  (Theatre Quotes) Mum wasn’t at all religious, but she thought that going to the theatre was as important a ceremonial, communal experience that a person could have  (Theatre Quotes) I began with dance, doing ballet at 3, then tap, jazz, modern. Then I sang in church choirs, learned how to play clarinet and drums, sang with rock bands and only then did I get into musical theatre  (Theatre Quotes) I came to write after several mini careers. I did live theatre, managed a cosmetics store and was a local television personality  (Theatre Quotes) Film is where I want to end up, but I don’t want to let go of theatre  (Theatre Quotes) I’ve been acting my whole life. I have this huge imagination! I’m a dancer and my mom’s a dance teacher, and I was always performing and entertaining people. I’d go to see live theatre or a movie, and I’d become the main character for a few days afterwards. I loved being somebody new for a temporary amount of time  (Theatre Quotes) I love storytelling and I love just relating directly to an audience. That’s why we do theatre, it’s because we love contact with the audience. We love the fact that the audience will change us. The way the audience responds makes us change our performance  (Theatre Quotes) When I was young, my mum was part of a brilliant puppet theatre that toured all over the world  (Theatre Quotes) Hollywood can be brutal, inhuman, the opposite of what the theatre is, and I had little desire to be part of it  (Theatre Quotes) The idea of doing theatre always terrified me because I get terrible stage fright. In the early 1970s I was offered a panto but the thought of going on stage was just too mortifying  (Theatre Quotes) I went to a lot of theatre schools, got a lot of training, did a lot of repertory where you do a different play every night. I took a lot of voice, movement, and acting classes  (Theatre Quotes) When I’m doing theatre, I feel like my life’s on hold. Even though you might go out for a coffee, or go and see a film, your brain is still there, pulling you back to it  (Theatre Quotes) The voices of moral authority in the theatre demanded only punctuality and physical performance. In the light of continuing pressure and stress, the occasional lip service paid to moderation was meaningless. Starvation and poisoning were not excesses, but measures taken to stay within the norm  (Theatre Quotes) When I was at drama school I wanted to do classical theatre. It just so happened that I did a film when I came out and I moved that way  (Theatre Quotes) I love the intimacy of making movies. The focus is deeper and much more intense than musical theatre  (Theatre Quotes) My family is not at all involved in television, or film, or theatre, or any of it, really  (Theatre Quotes) A lot of people think theatre must be much harder work than film, but anything histrionic or superfluous gets seen on camera so you have to work to distil it into a complete sense of what’s true  (Theatre Quotes) In our own, theatre can be the place where we come together, reaching with and through stories, to who we are and to who we can be  (Theatre Quotes) I started off dancing and playing sports, and I joined the drama stuff, the theatre stuff in middle school because my friends were involved, and it was kind of the cool thing to do  (Theatre Quotes) I never thought I’d be one of those old hams who favours theatre over everything, but I’m getting that way. Telly and film seemed more fun when I was younger; turning left on planes and washing up in nice places. But there are things that you only learn in theatre  (Theatre Quotes) I love the theatre. It’s a perfect life for an actor: you can do a couple of movies and then go and do a play, and then go back and do another movie. It’s a nice way to live your life  (Theatre Quotes) What I do believe is theatre is a medium with a peculiar ability to air vital issues  (Theatre Quotes) I didn’t want to get into acting just to play bystanders. I feel a bystander enough in my own life. And I do think that theatre can contribute to a certain analysis and commentary on our own world  (Theatre Quotes) In early youth, as we contemplate our coming life, we are like children in a theatre before the curtain is raised, sitting there in high spirits and eagerly waiting for the play to begin. It is a blessing that we do not know what is really going to happen. Could we foresee it, there are times when children might seem like innocent prisoners, condemned, not to death, but to life, and as yet all unconscious of what their sentence means  (Theatre Quotes) My mother was working on her college degree throughout my childhood, and being the youngest in the family, that meant being dragged to a lot of her classes. She majored in playwriting, so I was exposed to theatre from a very young age, and it was just the most magical world to me  (Theatre Quotes) I have to say my background was mostly theatre, which I love, and it took a long time to feel comfortable there. That’s probably true of anyone’s career  (Theatre Quotes) I love theatre. It’s far more satisfying than film. Sometimes there’s a collective sigh from the audience, or it’s so quiet you can hear a pin drop. I couldn’t believe how easy acting was when there’s an audience; after a few previews I almost couldn’t do it without one  (Theatre Quotes) My advice to young actors is probably to do some theatre; definitely do that. I keep running into these actors who have never been on stage, and it’s invaluable for an actor. What you will learn about yourself is huge  (Theatre Quotes) It is in the irony of things that the theatre should be the most dangerous place for the actor. But, then, after all, the world is the worst possible place, the most corrupting place, for the human soul. And just as there is no escape from the world, which follows us into the very heart of the desert, so the actor cannot escape the theatre. And the actor who is a dreamer need not. All of us can only strive to remain uncontaminated. In the world we must be unworldly, in the theatre the actor must be untheatrical  (Theatre Quotes) You go through a process of refinement and getting rid of the excesses of your early youth in terms of your excitement about what theatre can do  (Theatre Quotes)
