Text Quotes
Everyone can do a character the way they want to do it, unless the director tells them not to, which isn’t very common. I like to do my characters, if it’s not specific in the script, as myself  (The Script Quotes) If I made a mistake in singing a song or in the script, I could have some fun with it, then retain any of the fun that sounded amusing  (The Script Quotes) I really believe the form of the film must be in the scenario; cinema is not just added value to the scripting. I believe in it as a totality  (The Script Quotes) We are all thieves; we are all thieves; we have taken the scriptures in words, and know nothing of them in ourselves  (The Script Quotes) I am going to have to stick to the script. If I muck around with the words it will defeat the object  (The Script Quotes) I will cause a boy who drives a plow to know more of the scriptures than the pope  (The Script Quotes) You can never really know the scriptures until you’re willing to be changed by them  (The Script Quotes) The root of any film project for me is this inner need to express something. What nurtures this root and makes it grow into a tree is the script. What makes the tree bear flowers and fruit is the directing  (The Script Quotes) If the script grabs me and appeals to me, I’m really very keen to work on it  (The Script Quotes) Very often on some of this stuff when I’d have to go to work. I’d just give the script a cursory glance. I had no training, and I was a quick study, so nobody knew how involved or not involved I was. But I look at that stuff now and I can see I wasn’t involved, and I wasn’t very good  (The Script Quotes) I really believe that when you’re playing a character that everything is contained in the script. If I’m pulling from things from my own life, then I think I’m being disingenuous to the character and the story  (The Script Quotes) The script is the coloring book that you’re given, and your job is to figure out how to color it in. And also when and where to color outside the lines  (The Script Quotes) I love shooting, when the character is interesting and the script is interesting, but the research beforehand is really fun. The whole process makes me anxious and restless, and I have trouble sleeping, just trying to figure out the character  (The Script Quotes) If the script’s good, everything you need is in there. I just try and feel it, and do it honestly. I also don’t learn things for auditions, because I feel like it’s just a test of memorizing rather than being real. Maybe every other actor would think that was terrible, I don’t know. But it seems to have worked for me, so far  (The Script Quotes) It slightly depends on your perspective, sort of how you look at these things, but when I sit down to write a script, I’m not planning to write a script; I’m planning to make a film, and so I only see the script as being just a step there  (The Script Quotes) In television you don’t have a lot of time to spend with the role or the script. Typically you get a script a week prior to shooting. Sometimes it’s even less time, not enough time to dream about the role  (The Script Quotes) Sometimes you do a film because the script is amazing, sometimes you do it because you get to work with amazing people, and sometimes you do a film because they pay you money  (The Script Quotes) I feel I do my best work when it’s all there on the page, and I feel that the character is very vivid as I read the script and I’m not having to create stuff and trying to cobble together something. If I have to do that, then I don’t entirely trust what I’m doing  (The Script Quotes) If the script’s good, everything you need is in there. I just try and feel it, and do it honestly  (The Script Quotes) I love it when actors come to you with a problem and you have to listen. You’d like them to just get on with it, but it often means that there’s a problem with the script  (The Script Quotes) I love the feeling I get when I’m on a set; I love reading the scripts, playing the characters, getting to be someone else  (The Script Quotes) I always tend to see, right after reading the script, the character and how I want to play it. I guess that’s sort of most of the work, preparing for the role, but almost the creation of the character seems to go on as I read through the script  (The Script Quotes) A different script calls for different things. It always takes me a long time to get to know the part, and know the logic behind the words. I have to be with the script for quite a long time before things start to fall into place, before they become part of the character  (The Script Quotes) What I mostly do is take the script, analyse the hell out of it, see what’s in there, see what kind of person I’m dealing with, and then forget I’m playing a father and just play a person who exemplifies all those things  (The Script Quotes) I feel very blessed in my career to have been able to bounce back and forth between different things, television and film, comedies and some dramas, but I am, um, as long as the script inspires me and there good people, that’s it. I’m in  (The Script Quotes) I just choose the scripts I want to work on. I don’t know why. It’s not something conscious or that I’m doing on purpose  (The Script Quotes) For me, my rule in this industry is I’ve got to listen to my butterflies. So if I got butterflies, then those are the scripts I go after  (The Script Quotes) Sometimes you have a period piece where you have to research around it but, if the writers have done their homework well enough, the information is all in the script  (The Script Quotes) I worked in script development, many years ago, and read a lot of scripts. Between that and the scripts I’ve read as an actor, and I’m a writer as well, I think I have a pretty good sense about whether the bones of a story are there and whether the structure is intact  (The Script Quotes) If I get two lines in the script, I somehow turn it into 20. I’ve got a bit of a bad habit of doing that, of just embellishing my little moment  (The Script Quotes)
