Text Quotes
As I read more and more fairy tales as an adult, I found massive collusion between their ‘subjects’ and those in my fiction: childhood, nature, sexuality, transformation. I realized that it wasn’t by accident that I was drawn to their narrative structure and motifs.  (Tales Quotes) My ‘Rot and Ruin’ series is a post-apocalyptic adventure for teens. My ‘Joe Ledger’ novels are science-based action thrillers for adults. My ‘Dead of Night’ stories are zombie tales for adults; my ‘Pine Deep Trilogy’ is classic horror for adults, and I’ve written nonfiction books on topics ranging from martial arts to folklore.  (Tales Quotes) I love the idea that people are listening to Tales during all types of activities. Knitting in their favorite chair, rock climbing, sky diving, driving at night.  (Tales Quotes) If you wish for something hard enough, the fairy tales teach us, you can get it in the end. But it’s hardly ever the way you thought it would be, and the endings aren’t always happy ones.  (Tales Quotes) Definitely they write themselves. It’s an amazing experience. It’s like the characters have come alive and are sitting on my shoulder talking to me, telling me their tales.  (Tales Quotes) Tales of power and ambition and intrigue and betrayal and desire - when you’re telling those in a big way, you automatically want to go to Shakespeare.  (Tales Quotes) As I obsess about my ancient problems, I feel more like I’m sinking in quicksand than lighting a torch. I’m creating neither heat nor light, just the icky, perversely pleasurable squish of self-pity between my toes. My only defense is that I’m not the only one down here in the muck - our whole culture is doting on tales of personal tragedy.  (Tales Quotes) I said I didn’t respect religion... and anyone who believes in fairy tales to answer questions that we can’t answer... So I don’t respect our religions either. But I do believe it is a clash of civilizations, absolutely, between the Islamic world and the Western world. It has been going on for 1,000 years.  (Tales Quotes) I know the look of an apple that is roasting and sizzling on the hearth on a winter’s evening, and I know the comfort that comes of eating it hot, along with some sugar and a drench of cream... I know how the nuts taken in conjunction with winter apples, cider, and doughnuts, make old people’s tales and old jokes sound fresh and crisp and enchanting.  (Tales Quotes) When I wrote the eight fairy tales that appear in ‘Horse, Flower, Bird’ I was working toward a completely new form of artistic expression, trying to create a new kind of tale that also felt vintage: innocent and childlike, but haunted. I tried to write a picture-less picture book.  (Tales Quotes) I don’t think you ever outgrow your love for things that are bigger than life and more colorful than the average life. And somehow I feel that these comic book stories are like fairy tales for older people, because they have the same qualities.  (Tales Quotes) I don’t feel any shame I won’t apologize if there ain’t nowhere you can go running away from pain when you’ve been victimized tales from another broken home.  (Tales Quotes) I love fairy tales because of their haunting beauty and magical strangeness. They are set in worlds where anything can happen. Frogs can be kings, a thicket of brambles can hide a castle where a royal court has lain asleep for a hundred years, a boy can outwit a giant, and a girl can break a curse with nothing but her courage and steadfastness.  (Tales Quotes) When I was four years old, my father, who was a colonel in the army, was stationed in Salzburg, Austria. Across the street from our house was an ancient castle on a cliff. So when I first heard fairy tales, I felt as if the magic of ‘Cinderella’ or ‘Sleeping Beauty’ was taking place right in my own neighborhood.  (Tales Quotes) The spark for ‘In Praise of Slowness’ came when I began reading to my children. Every parent knows that kids like their bedtime stories read at a gentle, meandering pace. But I used to be too fast to slow down with the Brothers Grimm. I would zoom through the classic fairy tales, skipping lines, paragraphs, whole pages.  (Tales Quotes) I told my three sons stories about germs more than fifty years ago as fanciful bedtime tales  (Tales Quotes) Years ago, fairy tales all began with Once upon a time... now we know they all begin with, If I am elected.  (Tales Quotes) I also like the whole idea of fairy tales and folk tales being a woman’s domain, considered a lesser domain at the time they were told.  (Tales Quotes) I loved reading Grimm’s fairy tales and Hans Christian Andersen, and I loved to dream about other worlds and other lives. Maybe that has something to do with having an incomplete family, being an only child. All I know is I loved to pretend, and all that was in tandem with my wanting to be an actress.  (Tales Quotes) Crime stories are our version of sitting round a camp fire and telling tales. We enjoy being scared under safe circumstances. That’s why there’s no tradition of crime writing in countries that have wars.  (Tales Quotes) Even leaving aside government policy, whole industries are already making expensive changes around the perceived need to ‘go green.’ Al Gore and countless other prophets of global catastrophe are making megamillions pushing these expensive solutions. Schoolchildren around the globe are being frightened by tales of impending calamity.  (Tales Quotes) Being a literature major, you know, I’m very familiar with the ways symbolism is used in our sort of mythic tales of society, so anyone who is consciously trying to pull that off I think is really interesting and clearly very smart.  (Tales Quotes) Fairy tales are stories of triumph and transformation and true love, all things I fervently believe in.  (Tales Quotes) I believe in fairy tales. They are the basis of all our performance of storytelling and film-making - when we twist the real events of the world into something that offers us hope - and I believe in that.  (Tales Quotes) I am 39. I am single. I am a black woman. I have too many advanced degrees. Many a news story tells me finding true love is likely a hopeless proposition. Now is the time when I need to believe in fairy tales.  (Tales Quotes) I want to tell women that you need to love yourself and make yourself a priority. It’s only when you are happy yourself, can you make everyone else around you happy. I am still a dreamer and still believe in fairy tales, but there is only that much one should give another person. You need to keep something for yourself.  (Tales Quotes) Nicholas wanted to believe in fairy tales. She’d read her share, hoping for miracles, but in the end, there was no hundred acre wood to play in with her little stuffed animals. There was pain and crushing disillusionment and betrayal.  (Tales Quotes) So there are different examples of fairy tales, and sometimes I believe in them and sometimes I don’t.  (Tales Quotes) I began to believe the fairy tales: You know, how we’re all out there looking for our magical missing half.  (Tales Quotes) My parents read me fairy tales every night and I used to believe I was a fairytale princess, like every young girl. I had all the Disney dressing-up costumes and would play every character.  (Tales Quotes)
