Text Quotes
A writer often wants to change a reader’s perception about the world, which is a political act. But we have to work through character, so helping the reader to feel close to fictional characters is the gate through which we have to usher the reader  (Reader Quotes) The success of the poem is determined not by how much the poet felt in writing it, but by how much the reader feels in reading it  (Reader Quotes) If you’re going to spend two or three years immersed in a subject, you better be deeply interested in it, or it won’t be interesting to the reader  (Reader Quotes) The reader wants to see something happen between pages one and four hundred, and nothing happens if the characters don’t change  (Reader Quotes) The goal for me is to pull in the reader and to have them ask questions  (Reader Quotes) A prose writer never sees a reader walk out of a book; for a playwright, it’s another matter. An audience is an invaluable education. In my experience, theatre artists don’t know what they’ve made until they’ve made it  (Reader Quotes) Nice writing isn’t enough. It isn’t enough to have smooth and pretty language. You have to surprise the reader frequently, you can’t just be nice all the time. Provoke the reader. Astonish the reader. Writing that has no surprises is as bland as oatmeal. Surprise the reader with the unexpected verb or adjective. Use one startling adjective per page  (Reader Quotes) Tell a story! Don’t try to impress your reader with style or vocabulary or neatly turned phrases. Tell the story first!  (Reader Quotes) Imagine yourself in the scene. See what there is to be seen. Listen to the sounds. Touch the world. Smell the air. Taste it. Use all of your senses. Then evoke those experiences for the reader. If you give the audience the flavor, they’ll flesh out the moment in their own imaginations  (Reader Quotes) Notice how every science fiction movie or television show starts with a shot of the location where the story is about to occur. Movies that take place in outer space always start with a shot of stars and a starship. Movies that take place on another world always start with a shot of that planet. This is to let you know where you are. Novels and stories start the same way. You have to give the reader a sense of where he is and what’s happening as quickly as possible. You don’t want to start the story by confusing the reader  (Reader Quotes) I’ve never been a fast reader. I’m fickle; I don’t finish books I start; I put a book aside for five, ten years and then take it up again  (Reader Quotes) Almost all novels are improved by cutting from the top. On their first pages, authors parade those favourite effects which disgust the impartial reader  (Reader Quotes) I’m a fan of meeting readers face to face, at reader events, where we’re able to sit down and take some time to talk  (Reader Quotes) Sometimes a book is better than it ever had a right to be because of the history the reader brings to the reading and because of the methods educators use to bring a particular story alive  (Reader Quotes) Every kid I meet who’s a reader has got something like that, their fantasy world. And science fiction is the best, especially for girls because it’s the one place where you can do the forbidden  (Reader Quotes) I’d like the reader to decide if he is willing to pay minute sums for content. I’d like the economics of web to be controlled between authors and readers, not advertiser  (Reader Quotes) Novels are a kind of experiment in selfhood, for the reader as well as for the author  (Reader Quotes) I love the characters not knowing everything and the reader knowing more than them. There’s more mischief in that and more room for seriousness, too  (Reader Quotes) I am becoming increasingly difficult to please as a reader, but I adore being surprised by a really wonderful book, written by someone I’ve never heard of before  (Reader Quotes) I’ve always been a little bit more of a novel reader than a short story reader. I think the first books that made me want to be a writer were novels  (Reader Quotes) I want to tell a story that makes the reader always want to see what will happen next  (Reader Quotes) One key to the distinction between mystery and suspense writing involves the relative positions of hero and reader. In the ideal mystery novel, the readers is two steps behind the detective... The ideal suspense reader, on the other hand, is two steps ahead of the hero  (Reader Quotes) This skipping is another important point. It should be done whenever a proof seems too hard or whenever a theorem or a whole paragraph does not appeal to the reader. In most cases he will be able to go on and later he may return to the parts which he skipped  (Reader Quotes) No book that is written for an external purpose is going to be a passionately felt book for the writer or the reader. I don’t see the point in doing that  (Reader Quotes) I like moral judgment to emerge from the reader. We are being sold a very simplistic morality by our leaders at a time when nuance and understanding are at a premium  (Reader Quotes) I never studied writing, but I’d always been a reader and had a secret fantasy about being a writer  (Reader Quotes) I like connecting the abstract to the concrete. There’s a tension in that. I believe the reader or listener should be able to enter the poem as a participant. So I try to get past resolving poems  (Reader Quotes) No, I had not read any other comedian’s book. Not that I don’t enjoy other comedians; I’m just not a reader  (Reader Quotes) It is only when you open your veins and bleed onto the page a little that you establish contact with your reader. If you do not believe in the characters or the story you are doing at that moment with all your mind, strength, and will, if you don’t feel joy and excitement while writing it, then you’re wasting good white paper, even if it sells, because there are other ways in which a writer can bring in the rent money besides writing bad or phony stories  (Reader Quotes) Writing is something that I’ve always loved. That stems from my love of being a reader  (Reader Quotes)
