Text Quotes
In every age poets and social reformers have tried to stimulate the people of their own time to a nobler life by enchanting stories of the virtues of the heroes of old  (Poets Quotes) I’m passing on a tradition of which I am part. There’s a long line of poets who went before me, and I’m another one, and I’m hoping to pass that on to other younger, or newer, poets than myself  (Poets Quotes) Poets, we know, are terribly sensitive people, and in my observation one of the things they are most sensitive about is money  (Poets Quotes) If we’re gonna progress as a people we are going to realise that, as one of my favourite poets says, the other is a lie. There are no other people. Race is a social construct  (Poets Quotes) Im not, by nature, a collaborator. My biggest influences were people like painters and poets. These are solitary workers  (Poets Quotes) Most painters have painted themselves. So have most poets: not so palpably indeed, but more assiduously. Some have done nothing else  (Poets Quotes) How something important happens is the business of historians and newspapers, the effect it has is the business of philosophers and writers and especially poets  (Poets Quotes) The poets of each generation seldom sing a new song. They turn to themes men always have loved, and sing them in the mode of their times  (Poets Quotes) The arrogance of poets is only a defense; doubt gnaws the greatest among them; they need our testimony to escape despair  (Poets Quotes) Poets of course are even more unpredictable than other writers, overwhelmed as they are by the moment they inhabit and finding it difficult to connect yesterday with tomorrow  (Poets Quotes) The people must grant a hearing to the best poets they have else they will never have better  (Poets Quotes) Has the painter not always gone to an art school, or at least to an established master, for instruction? And the composer, the sculptor, the architect? Then why not the writer? Good poets, like good hybrid corn, are both born and made  (Poets Quotes) Indolence, of course, is an absolutely crucial part of the creative process: you do not find poets sitting in rows in cavernous word factories, staring at screens. They are rather to be found lolling on the sofa or strolling through the groves, nursing their melancholic temperaments and losing themselves in extended reveries  (Poets Quotes) See how weak prose is... Presently I shall go to a bar and there one or two poets will speak to me and I to them and we will try to destroy each other or attract each other and nothing will happen because we will be speaking in prose  (Poets Quotes) Without poets, without artists... everything would fall apart into chaos. There would be no more seasons, no more civilizations, no more thought, no more humanity, no more life even; and impotent darkness would reign forever. Poets and artists together determine the features of their age, and the future meekly conforms to their edit  (Poets Quotes) Poets and beggars, musicians and prophets, warriors and scoundrels, all creatures of that unbridled reality, we have had to ask but little of our imagination, for our crucial problem has been a lack of conventional means to render our lives believable. This, my friends, is the crux of our solitude  (Poets Quotes) Let us face a pluralistic world in which there are no universal churches, no single remedy for all diseases, no one way to teach or write or sing, no magic diet, no world poets, and no chosen races, but only the wretched and wonderfully diversified human race  (Poets Quotes) Not everyone who drinks is a poet. Some of us drink because we’re not poets  (Poets Quotes) Some of us – poets are not exactly poets. We live sometimes – beyond the word  (Poets Quotes) It’s interesting how young poets think of death while old fogies think of girls  (Poets Quotes) We rely upon the poets, the philosophers, and the playwrights to articulate what most of us can only feel, in joy or sorrow. They illuminate the thoughts for which we only grope; they give us the strength and balm we cannot find in ourselves. Whenever I feel my courage wavering, I rush to them. They give me the wisdom of acceptance, the will and resiliance to push on  (Poets Quotes) She was so intelligent that she could think herself into beauty. Intelligence... they don’t talk about it much, the poets, but when a woman is intelligent and passionate and good  (Poets Quotes) I do not know if all cops are poets, but I know that all cops carry guns with triggers  (Poets Quotes) If poets often commit suicide, it is not because their poems are bad but because they are good. Whoever heard of a bad poet committing suicide? The reader is only a little better off. The exhilaration of a good poem lasts twenty minutes, an hour at most. Unlike the scientist, the artist has reentry problems that are frequent and catastrophic  (Poets Quotes) The poets and philosophers I once loved had it wrong. Death does not come to us all, nor does the passage of time dim our memories and reduce our bodies to dust. Because while I was considered dead, and a headstone had been engraved with my name, in truth my life was just beginning  (Poets Quotes) It’s hard to put into words. Gorillas are not complainers. We’re dreamers, poets, philosophers, nap takers  (Poets Quotes) Our hospital was famous and housed many great poets and singers. Did the hospital specialize in poets and singers or was it that poets and singers specialized in madness?  (Poets Quotes) That’s what falling in love really amounted to, your brain on drugs. Adrenaline and dopamine, oxytocin and serotonin. Chemical insanity, celebrated by poets  (Poets Quotes) Life is empty. Life is meaningless. When we take a life, we arn’t taking anything of value. Wetboys are killers. Thats all we do. Thats all we are. There are no poets in the bitter business  (Poets Quotes) By failing to read or listen to poets, society dooms itself to inferior modes of articulation, those of the politician, the salesman, or the charlatan. In other words, it forfeits its own evolutionary potential. For what distinguishes us from the rest of the animal kingdom is precisely the gift of speech. Poetry is not a form of entertainment and in a certain sense not even a form of art, but it is our anthropological, genetic goal. Our evolutionary, linguistic beacon  (Poets Quotes)
