Text Quotes
As I published books, I realized, that’s not really what I want. I don’t care about the books as much anymore. I just want to write poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) Confessional poetry is, to my mind, more slippery than poems that are sloppily autobiographical; I find the confessional mode much more akin to dramatic monologue.  (Poetry Quotes) I know my voice has a limited range of motion; I don’t write dramatic monologues and pretend to be other people. But so far, my voice is broad enough to accommodate most of what I want to put into my poetry. I like my persona; I often wish I were him and not me.  (Poetry Quotes) What’s poetry? It’s not real but maybe it’s more than real. It’s dreaming while you’re awake.  (Poetry Quotes) Faith is the poetry of our dreams; action is the builder of our reality  (Poetry Quotes) I’ve often said that all poetry is political. This is because real poems deal with a human response to reality and politics is part of reality, history in the making. Even if a poet writes about sitting in a glass house drinking tea, it reflects politics.  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is a plan for a slit in the face of a bronze fountain goat and the path of fresh drinking water.  (Poetry Quotes) For the last 15 years that I have been performing, all I ever wanted to do was transcend poetry to the world. See, it wasn’t enough for me to write a book. It wasn’t enough for me to join a slam competition, and while those things hold weight, it wasn’t the driving force that pushes the pen to the pad.  (Poetry Quotes) Dylan Thomas is now as much a case history as a chapter in the history of poetry  (Poetry Quotes) There’s one of my new poems actually - is a good example of where my poetry has ended up. My earlier river poetry was more like a cross between Shelley and Dylan Thomas.  (Poetry Quotes) Probably induced by the asthma, I started reading and writing early on, my literary efforts from the age of about nine running chiefly to poetry and plays.  (Poetry Quotes) In Among the White Moon Faces, I wrote about my desire to be a writer as rooted in my obsessive hours of reading English novels and poetry. It was that spur, that desire, that pushed me to set aside love and marriage in my early twenties.  (Poetry Quotes) As anthropomorphic and surreal people have said my early writing was, to me it was really stock and almost banal in the sense that it was just description, the poetry of comparing: Your feet are like A, and your eyes like B.  (Poetry Quotes) I always loved singing and writing poetry. I always loved music, and I’ve loved writing my whole life. When I put them together, it was probably in my early 20s where I put words to music for the first time.  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is the harnessing of the paradox of earth cradling life and then entombing it  (Poetry Quotes) If you have so earth-creeping a mind that it cannot lift itself up to look to the sky of poetry... thus much curse I must send you, in the behalf of all poets, that while you live, you live in love, and never get favour for lacking skill of a sonnet; and, when you die, your memory die from the earth for want of an epitaph.  (Poetry Quotes) I’ve been writing since I was 10 or 11. I started with poetry because that was the easiest thing. It just kind of came naturally. I think at that time West Coast hip hop was huge; all these kids around me were like, ‘I want to be a rapper.’ But I’m a white girl, not going to be a rapper.  (Poetry Quotes) For whatever reason, people, including very well-educated people or people otherwise interested in reading, do not read poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) The residue of religion in my work appears as a modified transcendentalism, and the positivist scientific side of my thought appears as concreteness and realism. The effort to reconcile the two is at the core of all my poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) I see poetry as a path toward new understanding and transformation, and so I’ve looked at specific poems I love, and at poetry’s gestures in the broadest sense, in an effort to feel and learn what they offer from the inside.  (Poetry Quotes) I had always been literary, in the sense of loving poetry and discovering novels, but I found my voice, as they say, in an office full of elderly people who looked after blind ex-servicemen.  (Poetry Quotes) Whether you’re studying electrical engineering or poetry, college is not about maximizing income, it’s about becoming a better and more informed observer of the universe. And for me, at least, that what’s leads to a more fulfilling life.  (Poetry Quotes) My gut was always that if I taught students poetry, I would give too much of myself to them and have nothing left.  (Poetry Quotes) For me, poetry is the colour of Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes, or the pauses in Pinter’s plays - only the pauses, not the words.  (Poetry Quotes) Poetry is emotion, passion, love, grief - everything that is human. It is not for zombies by zombies.  (Poetry Quotes) Music is more emotional than prose, more revolutionary than poetry. I’m not saying I’ve got the answers, just a of questions that I don’t hear other artists asking.  (Poetry Quotes) I saw [Allen Ginsberg] more as an old man who liked poetry and who had a lot of physical and emotional problems. We liked our time together.  (Poetry Quotes) The commonest error made in relation to poetry is that it consists simply in verse-making. Many confound the casket of meter and rhyme with the jewel of thought which it encloses, and, perhaps, in some instances, after close investigation, they have found the casket empty and turned away with feelings of disappointment and disgust.  (Poetry Quotes) My father read poetry to me, encouraged me to memorize poems. But the writing of it was quite a different thing.  (Poetry Quotes) I felt like my favorite writers have almost musical hooks in their work, whether it’s poetry or a hook at the end of a chapter that makes you want to read the next one. And I think that my favorite writers definitely have something musical about what they do, in saying something so relatable and universal and so simple.  (Poetry Quotes)
