Text Quotes
I’m not really quiet or shy. Ask any of my friends! But I always ground my poetry in life itself. Poetry is an art of language, though, so I am always aware of every word’s meaning, or multiple meanings.  (Poetry Quotes) One culture I find fascinating to juxtapose against American culture is the culture of Germany. They’ve gone through a long process through their art, poetry, public discourse, their politics, of owning the fact of their complicity in what happened in World War II. It’s still a topic of everyday conversation in Germany.  (Poetry Quotes) Pain is essential. Often I cannot avoid it.Therefore all one can do is redeem it; and the only way to redeem it is through literature, art, poetry, music.  (Poetry Quotes) To me, art begets art. Painting feeds the eye just as poetry feeds the ear, which is to say that both feed the soul.  (Poetry Quotes) To me, photography is not just a visual art, but something closer to poetry - or at least to some poetry, such as the haiku.  (Poetry Quotes) For a lot of people, well-meaning teaching has made poetry seem arcane, difficult, a kind of brown-knotting medicine that might be good for you but doesn’t taste so good. So I tried to make a collection of poetry that would be fun. And that would bring out poetry as an art, rather than the challenge to say smart things.  (Poetry Quotes) I lived in the world of poetry and ideas. I thought life was all about art and philosophy. In the military, I suddenly found out about the real world.  (Poetry Quotes) To me Art (poetry) is a continuous and continuing process and that when a man fails to write good poetry he fails to live fully or well.  (Poetry Quotes) Colloquial poetry is to the real art as the barber’s wax dummy is to sculpture  (Poetry Quotes) Whatever your life’s pursuit -- art, poetry, sculpture, music, whatever your occupation may be -- you can be as spiritual as clergy, always living a life of praise.  (Poetry Quotes) The beauty, the poetry of the fear in their eyes. I didn’t mind going to jail for, what, five, six hours? It was absolutely worth it.  (Poetry Quotes) Prose cannot compete with the economy of poetry, the ability to have a full artistic experience in a short period of time.  (Poetry Quotes) Only those ignorant of what poetry means will ask the question: what is it good for?  (Poetry Quotes) Nothing I had written before ‘Mary Poppins’ had anything to do with children, and I have always assumed, when I thought about it at all, that she had come out of the same wall of nothingness as the poetry, myth and legend that had absorbed me all my writing life.  (Poetry Quotes) The attention deficit disorder of the culture is very distressing in America now and I think it puts a lot of things at risk, not just poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) The experimental poetry thing is not my thing. It’s a programme of the avant-garde: basically a refusal of the kind of poetry I write.  (Poetry Quotes) The idea of avant-garde art is a very suspicious thing to me, the idea that poetry is new and it keeps being new the way Chevrolets every year are new.  (Poetry Quotes) You have to really dive deep back into yourself and get rid of so much modern analytical categorization. It’s one of the great things poetry does.  (Poetry Quotes) Sometimes only poetry can say it. I think there’s just this deeper language, and away of putting your world back together again and breaking through barriers.  (Poetry Quotes) I come from a short fiction background, and my mom is a poet, so I’ve always read poetry; I’ve always had a lot of different influences both linguistically and musically.  (Poetry Quotes) Disobedience to conscience is voluntary; bad poetry, on the other hand, is usually not made on purpose.  (Poetry Quotes) If the art of poetry is?the art of making sense of the chaos of human experience, it’s not a bad thing to see a lot of chaos.  (Poetry Quotes) All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling. To be natural is to be obvious, and to be obvious is to be inartistic.  (Poetry Quotes) In school, I hated poetry - those skinny,Malnourished poems that professors love; The bad grammar and dirty words that catchIn the mouth like fishhooks, tear holes in speech.Pablo, your words are rain I run through,Grass I sleep in.  (Poetry Quotes) Philosophy is a bad master for poetry; religion worse; and politics self-serving will never serve the Muse.  (Poetry Quotes) I began writing poetry when I was about 10. Bad poetry, but you start with bad poetry.  (Poetry Quotes) That’s a rather flippant quote drinking and writing bad poetry from me. I mean, I said it, but I was doing other stuff too. I certainly didn’t manage the full stretch of four years.  (Poetry Quotes) Homosexuals are delicate and bad poetry is delicate and [Allen] Ginsberg turned the tables by making homosexual poetry strong poetry, almost manly poetry; but in the long run, the homo will remain the homo and not the poet.  (Poetry Quotes) I often tell people to stop being afraid of writing bad poetry, or bad anything. I think that a lot of times, when people claim that they have writer’s block, or that they get stuck, it’s just because they’re scared of writing bad things.  (Poetry Quotes) No poetry that I’m aware of, however bad or glorious, has ever left somebody a worse person than they were before they read it.  (Poetry Quotes)
