Text Quotes
When I was in college, I was the editor of the literary magazine and insisted neither the editors nor the writers be specifically identified - only our student numbers appeared on the title page. I love that idea and still do  (Literary Quotes) I would say that there is no future for literary studies as such in the United States  (Literary Quotes) The world gets older, without getting either better or worse and so does literature. But I do think that the drab current phenomenon that passes for literary studies in the university will finally provide it's own corrective  (Literary Quotes) Satire lies about literary men while they live and eulogy lies about them when they die  (Literary Quotes) My dad's got a brilliant eye for scripts 'cos he's a literary agent. He and my agent read a load of scripts and filter them  (Literary Quotes) Each book, intuitively sensed and, in the case of fiction, intuitively worked out, stands on what has gone before, and grows out of it. I feel that at any stage of my literary career it could have been said that the last book contained all the others  (Literary Quotes) As a writer, I'm not convinced that we are the best equipped to understand how we go about the business of literary production  (Literary Quotes) It might be an idea for all literary critics to read the books they analyse aloud - it certainly helps to fix them in the mind, while providing a readymade seminar with your audience  (Literary Quotes) A great literary work can be completely, completely unpredictable. Which can sometimes make them very hard to read, but it gives them a great originality  (Literary Quotes) I think it comes from really liking literary forms. Poetry is very beautiful, but the space on the page can be as affecting as where the text is. Like when Miles Davis doesn't play, it has a poignancy to it  (Literary Quotes) Novels are sweets. All people with healthy literary appetites love them - almost all women; a vast number of clever, hardheaded men  (Literary Quotes) Of course I didn’t pioneer the use of food in fiction: it has been a standard literary device since Chaucer and Rabelais, who used food wonderfully as a metaphor for sensuality  (Literary Quotes) My childhood was spent embracing one literary heroine after another. I identified passionately with each one and would slavishly imitate them  (Literary Quotes) When authors who write literary fiction begin to write screenplays, everybody assumes that’s the end. Here’s another who’s never going to write well again  (Literary Quotes) Young writers should be encouraged to write, and discouraged from thinking they are writers. If they arrive at college with literary ambitions, they should be told that everything they have done since their first childhood poems, printed in the school paper, has been preparation for entering a long, long apprenticeship  (Literary Quotes) I dislike literary jargon and never use it. Criticism has only one function and that is to help readers read and understand literature. It is not a science, it is an aid to art  (Literary Quotes) One would think that in writing about literary men and matters there would be no difficulty in finding a title for one’s essay, or that any embarrassment which might arise would be from excess of material. I find this, however, far from being the case  (Literary Quotes) I don’t have traceable literary models because I haven’t had great literary influences in my life  (Literary Quotes) A neurotic can perfectly well be a literary genius, but his greatest danger is always that he will not recognize when he is dull  (Literary Quotes) It must inquire not merely about the circumstances of the time in general, but in particular about the writer’s position with regard to these things, the interests and motives, the leading ideas of his literary activity  (Literary Quotes) The greater the conceptual significance of a literary product, the more it should be assumed that it is based on an idea that determines the whole, and that the deeper consciousness of the time to which it belongs is reflected in it  (Literary Quotes) Today, there are more opportunities for writers in terms of access to larger success, but it’s more difficult to publish a literary novel in the lower ranges. In other words, you almost have to hit a home run. You can hit a triple, maybe, but nobody’s interested in a single  (Literary Quotes) I might have simply settled down into an armchair literary life. I really don’t know exactly why I didn’t  (Literary Quotes) When I put together a graphic novel, I don’t think about literary prose. I think about storytelling  (Literary Quotes) Any biographer must of necessity become a pilgrim a peripatetic, obsessed literary pilgrim, a traveler with four eyes  (Literary Quotes) A key to my thinking has always been the almost fanatical belief that what I was engaged in was a literary art form. That belief was compounded out of ego and necessity, I guess, a combination of the two  (Literary Quotes) Ever since my youth it has disturbed me that of the literary works that survived their own epoch, so many dealt with historical rather than contemporary subjects  (Literary Quotes) The point of literary criticism in anthropology is not to replace research, but to find out how it is that we are persuasive  (Literary Quotes) When I became more involved in music, I had to give up some of my writing in the literary sense.
