Text Quotes
The stories I write are often literal to events that have happened or observations that I’ve made, and sometimes they’re fantastical  (Literal Quotes) The walking tour guides one through the city’s various landmarks, reciting bits of information the listener might find enlightening. I learned, for example, that in the late 1500s my little neighborhood square was a popular spot for burning people alive. Now lined with a row of small shops, the tradition continues, though in a figurative rather than literal sense  (Literal Quotes) When I went to high school in Australia, I was exposed to textbooks that outlined evolutionary ideas - such as ape-like creatures turning into people. I recognized the conflict between evolutionary ideas and a literal reading of the book of Genesis  (Literal Quotes) All the moral laws are readily translated into natural philosophy, for often we have only to restore the primitive meaning of thewords by which they are expressed, or to attend to their literal instead of their metaphorical sense. They are already supernatural philosophy  (Literal Quotes) You can’t have whatever you want. But to a child who must ask permission for every single thing, adulthood looks like a constant parade of every desire’s satisfaction. It is a heady and terrifying place. It is the Otherworld. It is Fairyland. In fantasy, we make this literal  (Literal Quotes) I argue against literal interpretation of religious doctrines. Religions make progress when they emancipate themselves from literalism, and take their doctrinal statements to be metaphors or allegories  (Literal Quotes) All of my songs are about me and my experiences. They’re very literal.  (Literal Quotes) I like Roy Orbison’s video for ‘I Drove All Night’ because it’s so literal. It is just a man driving throughout the night. I like that silliness. To be in a video is a ridiculous thing. It’s almost impossible to do it without any humour.  (Literal Quotes) My work never directly addresses the literal subject matter of the photograph, but attempts to ask questions about vision itself.  (Literal Quotes) I think the most attractive people are the confident ones, regardless of their literal appearance, so I strive for that. Basically, I think you’ll always be the size your body needs to be if you only eat if you are hungry. If you never eat for any other reason, you’ll be just the right size for your body.  (Literal Quotes) Fast food may appear to be cheap food and, in the literal sense it often is, but that is because huge social and environmental costs are being excluded from the calculations.  (Literal Quotes) I’m a big fan of Edouard Vuillard, so I’d like anything by him - particularly a painting called ‘Madame Hessel on the Sofa.’ His work is realistic without being literal: I can really imagine what Madame Hessel is thinking.  (Literal Quotes) I think people’s perception of a rich girl is literal, but metaphorically I embrace it as being rich in love, spirit, joy and religion. So it’s not about money.  (Literal Quotes) I think a really rich world to live in is where you’re thinking in terms of human behavior and human types and not being super literal. In order to see the deeper truth, you need to break out of literal frame of mind.  (Literal Quotes) I enjoy every climb - maybe it’s because it’s a literal dance between life and death  (Literal Quotes) The sea, the great unifier, is man’s only hope. Now, as never before, the old phrase has a literal meaning: we are all in the same boat.  (Literal Quotes) All men are born equal and free is not Nature’s law in the literal sense  (Literal Quotes) Glamour is a beautiful illusion - the word ‘glamour’ originally meant a literal magic spell - that promises to transcend ordinary life and make the ideal real. It depends on a special combination of mystery and grace. Too much information breaks the spell.  (Literal Quotes) People ask me about ‘The Hurt Locker’ a lot, and it’s an incredible piece of filmmaking - as are ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Platoon’ and ‘Full Metal Jacket’ and ‘Apocalypse Now.’ But they’re not necessarily true to war in a literal sense. What they are, really, are brilliant movies about Hollywood’s idea of war.  (Literal Quotes) Maintenance is what you have to do just so you can walk out the door knowing that if you go to the market and bump into a guy who once rejected you, you won’t have to hide behind a stack of canned food. I don’t mean to be too literal about this.  (Literal Quotes) In a war without aim, you tend not to aim. You close your eyes, close your heart. The consequences become hit or miss in the most literal sense.  (Literal Quotes) I started doing sculpture in 1959. I had no commissions then. They were painted, similar in style to the paintings... At a certain point, I decided I didn’t want an edge between two colors, I wanted color differences in literal space.  (Literal Quotes) Fanciful spiritualizing, so far from yielding God’s meaning, actually obscured it. The literal sense is itself the spiritual sense, coming from God and leading to Him.  (Literal Quotes) In a literal sense, even a private company, of course, cannot do everything that it wants without some discussion with government. As a good corporate citizen, Severstal discussed the idea of a merger with Arcelor with the Russian government.  (Literal Quotes) We become what we love and who we love shapes what we become. If we love things, we become a thing. If we love nothing, we become nothing. Imitation is not a literal mimicking of Christ, rather it means becoming the image of the beloved, an image disclosed through transformation. This means we are to become vessels of God’s compassionate love for others.  (Literal Quotes) I will argue that in the literal sense the programmed computer understands what the car and the adding machine understand, namely, exactly nothing.  (Literal Quotes) Since a photograph is frozen and mute, since there is no before and after, I don’t want there to be a conscious awareness of any kind of literal narrative. And that’s why I really try not to pump up motivation or plot or anything like that.  (Literal Quotes) There is a thing called the death wish, a literal thing. It doesn’t mean you want to die. It just means however we’re built, as we get into these years, some inner part of you does begin to accept the fact that you’re heading towards the end, and there’s a peace that comes with that.  (Literal Quotes) Any documentary; any capturing of a non-fiction event, is a hyper-realistic condensation of reality that hopefully reveals an emotional truth. It’s never the actual literal truth of an event.  (Literal Quotes) There is no part of the executive branch that more exists on the outer edge of executive prerogative than the American intelligence community - the intelligence community, CIA, covert action. My literal responsibility as director of CIA with regard to covert action was to inform the Congress - not to seek their approval, to inform.  (Literal Quotes)
