Text Quotes
Most - and I mean maybe 99% or more - graphic novels are simply fat comicbooks. The term is a bogus, cocked-up concept some marketing whizkid conceived to get comics on the shelves of bookstores  (Graphic Quotes) Over the years, I observed that many talented graphic designers, including those in my own family, had difficulty getting their designs to market. I thought it would be possible to hold open stationery design competitions where all designers could participate  (Graphic Quotes) One way of understanding a graphic novel is that it’s an ambitious comic and one way or another my comics have had ambitions. I have no problem with escapism. When I get my depressions all I want to do is escape reality  (Graphic Quotes) The graphic novel? I love comics and so, yes. I don’t think we talked about that. We weren’t influenced necessarily by graphic novels but we certainly, once the screenplay was done, we talked about the idea that you could continue, you could tell back story, you could do things in sort of a graphic novel world just because we kind of like that world  (Graphic Quotes) I felt there was a certain amount of violence in the graphic and that it could still be cheated on screen so you could still have a hard PG-13 and open up your audience. Anybody can read the graphic novel. If you’re 14, you can go out and buy it, and I felt that if you’re 14 you should be able to see this movie [The Loosers]  (Graphic Quotes) I started designing book jackets, which was great because I was good at it. And then from there I decided to become a freelance graphic designer and I needed to expand beyond book jackets, so I taught myself web design, and then in 1999 some friends of mine decided to start a company called Xanga.com, which was a very early kind of social network slash blogging community  (Graphic Quotes) I’ve come up through art school, through painting, through graphic design, through advertising, through TV commercials and music video. I’ve designed books, built billboards, matchbooks, corporate identities. I continuously paint, I’ve done conceptual art pictures.  (Graphic Quotes) I was always interested in art at school, and after year twelve, senior year, I spent three years studying graphic design at college. I worked in advertising for two years but didn’t like it much, then began doing a bit of illustration work for various publishers.  (Graphic Quotes) One of my favorite graphic novels of all time is Grant Morrison’s ‘Earth-2.’  (Graphic Quotes) There are still some people out there who believe comic books are nothing more than, well, comic books. But the true cognoscenti know graphic novels are - at their best - an amazing blend of art literature and the theater of the mind.  (Graphic Quotes) I’ve always been really impressed with some of the longer graphic novels and thought it would be really amazing if one day I could try something like that.  (Graphic Quotes) Diary of a Teenage Girl’ was my first American movie. It was my first movie in an American accent. It’s based on a graphic novel, which was written in 2002 by someone called Phoebe Gloeckner. It was turned into a play by Marielle Heller, who then wrote it as a screenplay for Sundance Labs.  (Graphic Quotes) Of course, I did lots of what would be called graphic design now, what used to be called commercial art.  (Graphic Quotes) I don’t see myself as an artist. I work with artists and collaborate with them, but then it becomes graphic design. It’s not an art. I’m a graphic designer.  (Graphic Quotes) I dropped out of school for a semester, transferred to another college, switched to an art major, graduated, got married, and for a while worked as a graphic designer.  (Graphic Quotes) I would love to collaborate on a graphic novel with an artist - I’m terrible at drawing but I really love that genre.  (Graphic Quotes) I don’t keep a record of the parts I’ve played, and I don’t compare characters, but maybe I should? I could construct a graphic that grades badness and madness levels? Interesting idea.  (Graphic Quotes) Perhaps because of my background as a graphic designer, I’m drawn to rich and beautiful colors  (Graphic Quotes) Writing for children, you do bear a responsibility to not include overt or graphic adult content that they are not ready for and don’t need, or to address adult concepts or themes from an oblique angle or a child’s limited viewpoint, with appropriate context, without being graphic or distressing.  (Graphic Quotes) As you know, transforming such a big book [The Gunslinger Born] into graphic novel format is really a process of translation.  (Graphic Quotes) When we were filming ‘The Darkest Hour,’ we didn’t even know what the aliens were going to look like, we didn’t even have a graphic reference. So it was definitely a big challenge to sell those kind of extreme moments when you’re just generating them from your own imagination.  (Graphic Quotes) Graphic novel genre become really quite popular. It’s really a big screen film genre that they have successfully moved into the small screen.  (Graphic Quotes) I wear the same thing every day. I always pack two black jackets, loads of black T-shirts, loads of white jeans. I feel a little fresh and glamorous and graphic.  (Graphic Quotes) Subtle horror is where you rarely see the blood and gore. The violent people are called splatter-punks, who prefer graphic, unrelenting, violent, fast-paced horror. I prefer horror stories with mysterious elements that are chock-full of suspense.  (Graphic Quotes) The other big factor in building trust quickly is site design quality. Mint.com has one of the best graphic designers ever (Jason Putorti) - he cares about every pixel, all the fonts, all the transparencies and effects. And that shows instantly. People do make judgments of trust on appearance - in the real world and online.  (Graphic Quotes) I had come to the point when I realized it was unlikely that my film career was going to move beyond a certain level of role. And I was - because I had graphic instances of it - handicapped by the success of Star Trek. A director would say, ‘I don’t want Jean-Luc Picard in my movie’ - and this was compounded by X-Men as well.  (Graphic Quotes) For ‘American Born Chinese,’ my first graphic novel with First Second Books, I did mostly ‘memory’ research. It’s fiction, but I pulled heavily from my own childhood.  (Graphic Quotes) I’ve got an original graphic novel called ‘The Indian and the Bandit’ that I’m writing with a childhood friend.  (Graphic Quotes) I love graphic design. I love working with design, and I love storytelling, so I’ve been working on a children’s book for a while, and I’d like to see that through.  (Graphic Quotes) Sometimes, violent details have been eliminated from fairy tales simply because they were deemed too graphic. So one does not, at the end of Disney’s version of ‘Cinderella,’ see the stepsisters’ eyes get pecked and pecked by doves, because Disney wanted to market the story for wholesome family viewing.  (Graphic Quotes)
