Text Quotes
I like living in the 20th century... to me the world has never been more beautiful. I am trying to paint the real world I live in, as beautifully as I can with my own eyes  (Century Quotes) Climate change is a result of the greatest market failure the world has seen... We risk damages on a scale larger than the two world wars of the last century  (Century Quotes) There’s no happy ending where we prevent climate change any more. Now the question is, is it going to be a miserable century or an impossible one, and what comes after that  (Century Quotes) Civilization as we know it will come to an end sometime in this century unless we can find a way to live without fossil fuels  (Century Quotes) The bulldozer and not the atomic bomb may turn out to be the most destructive invention of the 20th century  (Century Quotes) A century that began with children having virtually no rights is ending with children having the most powerful legal instrument that not only recognizes but protects their human rights  (Century Quotes) Through music we may wander where we will in time, and find friends in every century  (Century Quotes) Earlier in this century, philanthropy often flowed from the wills of dead industrialists. In recent decades, it’s as likely to have come from a very alive business leader, entertainer, artist or sports star. The most effective of these patrons begin the process of giving by asking what they care about passionately  (Century Quotes) There is no strong evidence to prove significant human influence on climate on a global basis. The global cooling trend from 1940 to 1970 is inconsistent with models based on anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. There is no reliable evidence to support that the 20th century was the warmest in the last 1000 years  (Century Quotes) The simple fact is that, since the beginning of this century, the average global temperature has flatlined; indeed, over the past 18 months it has fallen back, and according to the satellite measurements of temperature, it is now basically back at the level it was in 1979, when such measurements started to be taken  (Century Quotes) No matter what else happens, this is the century in which we must learn to live without fossil fuel  (Century Quotes) This argument has been codified in the twentieth century as meritocracy, in which those on top in the process of capitalist accumulation have merited their position  (Century Quotes) If we go on as we are, we will destroy in the next century everything that the poets have been singing about for the past two thousand years  (Century Quotes) We’ve poured our poisons into the world as though it were a bottomless pit.. and we go on gobbling them up. It’s hard to imagine how the world could survive another century of this abuse, but nobody’s really doing anything about it. It’s a problem our children will have to solve, or their children  (Century Quotes) A three billion year old planet floating in the vast universe with mountains, seventy percent seas and oceans, fertile lands, immense forests, rivers and lakes, sea shores and deserts, this is where we humans have the privilege to live, the latest, most advanced newcomers in evolution. What an immense, incredible responsibility we have to be a right, positive element in the further evolution of that planet. That is the big question before us in the new century and millennium  (Century Quotes) The journey to a different future must begin by defining the problem differently than we have done until now.. The task is not to find substitutes for chemicals that disrupt hormones, attack the ozone layer, or cause still undiscovered problems, though it may be necessary to use replacements as a temporary measure. The task that confronts us over the next half century is one of redesign  (Century Quotes) In the next century, nations as we know it will be obsolete; all states will recognize a single, global authority. National sovereignty wasn’t such a great idea after all  (Century Quotes) If we don’t take the necessary measures, famine will be the scandal of this century  (Century Quotes) The same way that mid century modern architecture was in the 50s, I want to be as a human being. New. Different. Challenging the old. Function over frivolity. Clean living. Clean lines  (Century Quotes) The hold of the evolutionary paradigm is so powerful that an idea which is more like a principle of medieval astrology than a serious twentieth century scientific theory has become a reality for evolutionary biologists  (Century Quotes) Remember that life’s length is not measured by its hours and days, but by that which we have done therein. A useless life is short if it lasts a century. There are greater and better things in us all, if we would find them out. There will always be in this world – wrongs. No wrong is really successful. The day will come when light and truth and the just and the good shall be victorious and wrong as evil will be no more forever  (Century Quotes) I cannot sufficiently celebrate the glorious liberty that reigns in the public libraries of the twentieth century as compared with the intolerable management of those of the nineteenth century, in which the books were jealously railed away from the people, and obtainable only at an expenditure of time and red tape calculated to discourage any ordinary taste for literature  (Century Quotes) It is said that peace is the basic tenet of all religion. Yet it is in the name of religion that there has been so much disturbance, bloodshed and persecution. It is indeed a pity that even at the close of the twentieth century we’ve had to witness such atrocities because of religion. Flying the flag of religion has always proved the easiest way to crush to nothingness human beings as well as the spirit of humanity  (Century Quotes) Nationalism and patriotism are the two most evil forces that I know of in this century or in any century and cause more wars and more death and more destruction to the soul and to human life than anything else  (Century Quotes) For most of history, war has been a more or less functional institution, providing benefits for those societies that were good at it, although the cost in money, in lives, and in suffering was always significant. Only in the past century have large numbers of people begun to question the basic assumption of civilized societies that war is inevitable and often useful  (Century Quotes) We are about half a century away from being ecologically and economically bankrupt because of global warming  (Century Quotes) The problem is that I am in the wrong century to burn things. I am the wrong generation to let it go  (Century Quotes) A warming of this magnitude would risk the end of civilization as we know it by the end of this century  (Century Quotes) When historians look back on our century, they may remember it most, not for space travel or the release of nuclear energy, but as the time when the peoples of the world first came to take one another seriously  (Century Quotes) Humanity cannot afford to muddle through the rest of the twentieth century; the risks are too great, and the stakes are too high. This may be the last opportunity to choose our own and our descendants’ destiny. Failing to choose or making the wrong choices may lead to catastrophe. But it must never be forgotten that the right choices could lead to a much better world  (Century Quotes)
