Text Quotes
I had a brilliant drama teacher while I was at Roland Park: Ann Mainolfi. But the school was mostly rich in academics. It wasn’t like I was prepping myself for a life in acting. There, you prepped yourself to have a stable future. The school’s piece de resistance is college prep - it didn’t teach you how to audition for a TV show.  (Audition Quotes) I did six Broadway shows, and I noticed there weren’t many female comedians. When I went to a dancing audition, there were 1,000 girls. And there were three jobs. So I said I’ll just try comedy. And I loved it.  (Audition Quotes) So the only things I was being allowed to audition for were small roles in comedies. It broke my heart. No one would see me for anything else. I knew, in order to open up my career, I had to leave or that’s all I would ever be given.  (Audition Quotes) I came to New York when I was eighteen years old, and the first audition that I ever went to was this huge cattle call at the Equity building where I had gone two days earlier to sign up - I didn’t have an agent or anything. It was for ‘Chicago.’ There were probably three hundred people there.  (Audition Quotes) Donnie Darko’ was my first audition ever! It opened my eyes to the possibilities within camera work.  (Audition Quotes) For film, I audition just like everyone else, because it’s a different set of casting directors.  (Audition Quotes) I was the first person in the world to audition for ‘The Hobbit’. The casting director told me that when I went in. That’s a lot of pressure, isn’t it? The first person in the world.  (Audition Quotes) I can’t watch my first audition because it makes me too upset. I just think it is really sad. I look at myself and don’t recognize myself. I do think fame and fortune changes people.  (Audition Quotes) I think the process of ‘SNL’ is still pretty formal. You make an audition tape, your agent sends it in, they watch people’s tapes, and then they invite people to perform at a comedy club in Los Angeles or New York. But I don’t know how much actual scouting they do online.  (Audition Quotes) I did a ‘Last Comic Standing’ audition in 2006, where you’re just performing for three people in a comedy club, in a big comedy club, and I remember them cutting me off, asking about my name in the middle of one of my jokes. Yeah, it’s just real weird when you’re doing stand-up in that type of sterile, unnatural setting.  (Audition Quotes) However, I’m at a very comfortable place in my career and celebrity, in that I don’t have to audition as extensively as I used to for roles but yet I’m not immediately recognizable.  (Audition Quotes) I loved ‘BattleDome.’ It was the first thing I ever auditioned for, and I was so crazy in the audition that I knew I had the part.  (Audition Quotes) When I first got the audition for Shado, I went online and subscribed to DC Comics and read a bunch on Shado and the Yakuza, just to get to know her character better.  (Audition Quotes) I got the pilot for ‘Scrubs’ sent to me, and in the margin for Dr. Cox, it said ‘a John McGinley type.’ So when I went in to audition, I said to Billy Lawrence, who’s a dear friend of mine, I said, ‘Well, I’m John McGinley.’  (Audition Quotes) I was thrown in the deep end at 18 when I got cast in a movie that I didn’t audition for. The director just sort of found me and put me in a film, so the decision was really made for me.  (Audition Quotes) I was involved with my theater program in high school, and I was involved in a festival where I could audition for a lot of different schools.  (Audition Quotes) Auditioning and actually acting on a set are two different things. When you audition, you’re in a room and you don’t have anything to play with and you don’t have anything physically in the room. Whereas on set, you have direction, you have costumes, and you have other actors to work with. It’s a completely different thing.  (Audition Quotes) I give myself homework when I have an audition. I give myself goals, and that’s how I check how I’m doing. It can be something simple like ‘listen,’ or ‘find your feet.’ And then afterward it’s an assessment, so in a way it’s not about booking the job or not. It’s about what I learned as an actor about that character.  (Audition Quotes) When I was 16 years old, I joined a drama group called North Queensland Academy of Dramatic Art under a woman called Maggie Shephard-King. She inspired me to audition for the role of Romeo in ‘Romeo and Juliet.’  (Audition Quotes) I was a football player at college and dislocated my thumb. I was out for a bit and passed the theatre and saw some lovely drama students walking into an audition for ‘Much Ado About Nothing’ and thought: ‘That’s what I’ll do when I recover.’ I joined that production and was hooked.  (Audition Quotes) I work with a group of actors, and whenever one of us has an audition, we all get together, and we all work together on it. I think it takes us back to our film school days, our drama school days, us just working together and figuring it out because somebody else is going to see something in the material that you won’t see.  (Audition Quotes) The wonderful drama teacher at my high school, Barbara Patterson, saw me standing in the hall and told me I should audition for ‘West Side Story.’ I guess she thought I looked like a gang member.  (Audition Quotes) When I graduated from high school, I had artistic and academic scholarships, and I was trying to figure out what to do. I decided to audition for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, Julliard, and the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, Australia.  (Audition Quotes) I went into the ‘Idol’ audition with no expectations; that’s just the kind of person I am. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t hurt so badly, you know? But once I made it past the first round, and the second, and third - I started to realize, ‘Maybe my goals and dreams really are attainable.’  (Audition Quotes) I remember being unemployed and walking the East Village streets for many years, constantly checking my voice mail on pay phones, hoping for an audition.  (Audition Quotes) All you have is yourself and what you have to present, and just focus on that. And if you can walk out of the audition and say to yourself, ‘I hit all my beats,’ ‘I accomplished my emotional honesty,’ or ‘I remembered my words,’ then that’s winning.  (Audition Quotes) When I was 9, I auditioned for an arts school in Toronto with a few of my friends. The sole reason we auditioned was that we found out you got to miss a couple days of school to do the audition. Without actually wanting to go to arts school, I accidentally got in. My parents encouraged me to try it, and I ended falling in love with performing.  (Audition Quotes) Pilot season is always crazy because you audition for a million things, and really, in the end, it’s not up to you.  (Audition Quotes) There are more things to worry about in the world than a messed-up audition. It’s out of your hands. So often, it’s not down to acting abilities but something an actor has no control over. So go in, be prepared, do your job, and go and enjoy the rest of your day.  (Audition Quotes) Sometimes you go into an audition and you’ll do what you think the character is, and then if they agree, then it’s awesome and you’ll book it maybe, and you’ll live happily ever after. But sometimes they don’t agree.  (Audition Quotes)
