Text Quotes
At the outset, I want to say that the suggestion that the struggle in South Africa is under the influence of foreigners or communists is wholly incorrect. I have done whatever I did because of my experience in South Africa and my own proudly felt African background, and not because of what any outsider might have said.  (African Quotes) I use African-American, because I teach African Studies as well as African-American Studies, so it’s easy, neat and convenient. But sometimes, when you’re in a barber shop, somebody’ll say, Did you see what that Negro did? A lot of people slip in and out of different terms effortlessly, and I don’t think the thought police should be on patrol.  (African Quotes) I’m always telling people baseball needs to be more prominent in the African American community. What a better way to do so, going on these TV shows and appearing on the cover of this or that. Now kids can see how baseball can change your life. Frank Thomas did that for me.  (African Quotes) Coming up in the Bay Area and being African American in a city that has a history of complex issues of violent crime, interaction with the police is always intense. That’s something you have to learn. My mom taught me at a young age that if ever a cop stops you, you put your hands up and freeze - don’t move.  (African Quotes) To call yourself a Chinese artist or woman artist or African artist reflects a certain kind of condition. To me, that is not necessary.  (African Quotes) Most Americans know nothing about the African forest, and it seems to them a very scary, spooky dangerous place. I’ve spent a lot of time in the forests of central Africa. I know they’re beautiful places that contain a lot of different kinds of creatures, including some that carry Ebola.  (African Quotes) Cassius Clay is a name that white people gave to my slave master. Now that I am free, that I don’t belong anymore to anyone, that I’m not a slave anymore, I gave back their white name, and I chose a beautiful African one.  (African Quotes) The toughest challenge I faced came right at the beginning of my career with ‘Blood Knot,’ which was trying to convince South African audiences that South African stories also had a place on the stage.  (African Quotes) It’s very difficult, I would imagine, to distinguish father and daughter. And maybe some of it comes as I’m doing my thing and my father being a very strong political African figure for so many years. Whatever he does is almost like some kind of cloud on top.  (African Quotes) There’s something really cool about being able to fly to South Africa and watch one of the most talented African footballers wearing a shoe on the field.  (African Quotes) You don’t have to be African American to really enjoy ‘Frisky Business’. But as far as being black, a lot of people in New York have been stopped and frisked, so that hits home for them.  (African Quotes) I think there’s something very dark in the South African psyche. I think we live a lot of the time in a state of a very low-grade civil war; the levels of violence in South Africa are extremely high. In a way, the civil war that never happened is being played out in a covert way, so we live with a lot of very ugly things.  (African Quotes) With literature, sometimes a book is presented in the media as being say, a Muslim story or an African story, when essentially it’s a universal story which we can all relate to it, no matter what race or social background we come from.  (African Quotes) I am half Puerto Rican, a quarter German and a quarter black. That was always a big issue for me - being mixed race - because casting directors tended to be very like, ‘OK, are you Hispanic for this role?’ ‘Or is she going to be African American?’  (African Quotes) The perception of linked fate and that feeling of being always on the spot as a representative of the race, at least in mixed company, are features of African American life that predate affirmative action and arise outside of its presence.  (African Quotes) Our daily deeds as ordinary South Africans must produce an actual South African reality that will reinforce humanity’s belief in justice, strengthen its confidence in the nobility of the human soul, and sustain all our hopes for a glorious life for all.  (African Quotes) We believe that African football is among the best in the world and very much characterized the Puma brand mentality, which is to win.  (African Quotes) If African farmers can use improved seeds and better practices to grow more crops and get them to market, then millions of families can earn themselves a better living and a better life.  (African Quotes) I’m a member of the African diaspora: my parents left the Caribbean and came to London for a better life.  (African Quotes) The very first role I ever played was as a 17-year old South African girl who dreamed of being a star and left home to meet her mother in the big city so that she could pursue that dream. I left South Africa and met my mother in Vancouver and not long after that was given the opportunity to perform on the stage and have people chant my name.  (African Quotes) A lot of African wildlife is very big. If you’re protecting the big stuff, you’re usually protecting the small stuff, too.  (African Quotes) Black English is simpler than standard English in some ways; for example, it often gets by with just ‘be’ and drops ‘am,’ ‘is,’ and ‘are.’ That’s because black English arose when adult African slaves learned the language.  (African Quotes) Pretty Deadly’ is the story of these immortal and mortal characters, and the mortals’ story follows Sarah’s family, a black family, through the ages. I never made the choice of, ‘Oh, this is gonna be the story of an African American family!’  (African Quotes) Me being a black girl in London, whose mom is first-generation African and whose dad is West Indian, gives me a different view. I’m coming at soul from my own place.  (African Quotes) (Harry Reid) was wowed by Obama’s oratorical gifts and believed that the country was ready to embrace a black presidential candidate, especially one such as Obama - a ‘light-skinned’ African American ‘with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.  (African Quotes) The reason why Botswana has done very well is because it’s the only black African country which went back to its roots and built upon its own indigenous institutions.  (African Quotes) The curly red lines across the African deserts had the fascination of a magnet, and I hoped fervently that the pioneers who were writing their names over the blank spaces, would leave just one small desert for me.  (African Quotes) I have an African gray parrot; her name is Eli. We thought she was a boy. And a blue-streaked lory named Marco. He’s 10. And a yellow and green parakeet, Petey. He’s very cute, but he’s getting old.  (African Quotes) Never have a picture of a well-adjusted African on the cover of your book, or in it, unless that African has won the Nobel prize.  (African Quotes) My father passed away a few days before my election. This man, an African American born to a poor single mother in 1936 in the South, would worry in the last years of his life that he had better life chances when he was growing up than a young man born in the same circumstances would have today.  (African Quotes)
