Text Quotes
I have been influenced by many different artists at many different stages of my life. Starting out, it was people like Elton John, Billy Joel, Ben Folds, and Fiona Apple. As I got older I got deeper into the work of bands like the Beatles, artists like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Etta James, and Joni Mitchell  (Ray Charles Quotes) I was one of I think three white girls in my school. So, I was very much an outsider. And plus I was Jewish and all of my friends were black and Baptist because they listen to the coolest music. We were all listening to Ray Charles and what was then called race music  (Ray Charles Quotes) I knelt at the altar of Ray Charles for years. I worked at a restaurant, and that’s all there was on the jukebox  (Ray Charles Quotes) You got to set your mind right and the rest will come to you naturally. No restrictions, no hang-ups, no stupid rules, no formalities, no forbidden fruit - just everyone getting and giving as much as he and she can  (Ray Charles Quotes) Randy Newman seemed like an even worse singer than me. I liked Ray Charles, Levi Stubbs, Jack Jones, Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett  (Ray Charles Quotes) I liked the more sophisticated urban style of blues like Ray Charles and B. B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Lou Rawls; people like that with more of a tendency toward jazz  (Ray Charles Quotes) You knew the difference between Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, straight away. Now everyone sounds like each other, and I don’t think that’s right.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I have the background singers of Ray Charles, the background singers of Smokey Robinson, and the background singers of Barry White and I built a choir around that.  (Ray Charles Quotes) With singing, the name of the game is to make yourself believable. When somebody hears you sing a song, and they say, ‘Oh, that must have happened to him,’ that’s when you know you’re transmitting. It’s like being a good actor. You make people feel things, emotions and what not.  (Ray Charles Quotes) What I’ve got to live up to, is being myself. If I do that, the rest will take care of itself.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I suppose I’ve always done my share of crying, especially when there’s no other way to contain my feelings. I know that men ain’t supposed to cry, but I think that’s wrong. Crying’s always been a way for me to get things out which are buried deep, deep down. When I sing, I often cry. Crying is feeling, and feeling is being human. Oh yes, I cry.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I’m a firm believer in God himself, but that’s as far as I can go. I’m not any denomination. I’m not Catholic or Presbyterian or Baptist or Methodist or Jewish or Muslim. I’m none of those things. And I’m sure that’s just fine with God.  (Ray Charles Quotes) There’s nothing written in the Bible, Old or New testament, that says, ‘If you believe in Me, you ain’t going to have no troubles.’  (Ray Charles Quotes) I don’t know about other writers, but for myself, to write I must be relatively quiet - it’s very difficult to write with the telephone and the doorbell ringing and conversation going on; I’m not that good a writer to write through all that!  (Ray Charles Quotes) People couldn’t understand why my mama would have this blind kid out doing things like cutting wood for the fire. But her thing was: He may be blind, but he ain’t stupid.  (Ray Charles Quotes) Rhythm and blues used to be called race music. ... This music was going on for years, but nobody paid any attention to it.  (Ray Charles Quotes) Before I begin, let me say right here and now that I’m a country boy. And, man, I mean the real backwoods! That’s at the start of the start of the thing, and that’s at the heart of the thing.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I’m not a jazz singer, blues singer or country singer. I’m a singer that can sing rhythm and blues, that can sing jazz, that can sing country. There’s a big difference. In other words, I’m not a specialist.  (Ray Charles Quotes) It’s like Duke Ellington said, there are only two kinds of music - good and bad. And you can tell when something is good.  (Ray Charles Quotes) There are many spokes on the wheel of life. First, we’re here to explore new possibilities.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me - like food or water.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I didn’t even respect singers until I heard Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong  (Ray Charles Quotes) Learning to read music in Braille and play by ear helped me develop a [very] good memory  (Ray Charles Quotes) I really feel that if you’re gonna be good, you gotta practice... Practice whatever the hell you do.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I am very into lyrics. I start with what the words are saying, what the storyline is saying, like a good script. It should really capture me, do something for me. If I don’t get it, it’s not going to move people, and if it’s not going to move people, it’s not going to happen.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I think that most great artists who are extremely known, as I am, would intimidate a lot of people. I don’t want to do that to people, but I know I do.  (Ray Charles Quotes) Strange now to think of you, gone without corsets and eyes, while I walk on the sunny pavement of Greenwich Village. downtown Manhattan, clear winter noon, and I’ve been up all night, talking, talking, reading the Kaddish aloud, listening to Ray Charles blues shout blind on the phonograph  (Ray Charles Quotes) There’s such a thing as too much happiness and sadness. What I’m after is contentment.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I met Quincy Jones in Seattle. We were kids together... liked each other when we met and have been close ever since. He wasn’t writing when we met - in fact, I more or less started him off to write; voicing, harmony, and stuff like that.  (Ray Charles Quotes) I never wanted to be famous. I only wanted to be great  (Ray Charles Quotes)
