Text Quotes
Poetry is not the proper antithesis to prose, but to science. Poetry is opposed to science, and prose to meter. The proper and immediate object of science is the acquirement, or communication of truth; the proper and immediate object of poetry is the communication of immediate pleasure  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is the journal of the sea animal living on land, wanting to fly in the air. Poetry is a search for syllables to shoot at the barriers of the unknown and the unknowable. Poetry is a phantom script telling how rainbows are made and why they go away  (Poetry Is Quotes) ... poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action. Poetry is the way we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought. The farthest horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives  (Poetry Is Quotes) On our earth, before writing was invented, before the printing press was invented, poetry flourished. That is why we know that poetry is like bread; it should be shared by all, by scholars and by peasants, by all our vast, incredible, extraordinary family of humanity  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a sort of inspired mathematics, which gives us equations, not for abstract figures, triangles, squares, and the like, but for the human emotions. If one has a mind which inclines to magic rather than science, one will prefer to speak of these equations as spells or incantations; it sounds more arcane, mysterious, recondite  (Poetry Is Quotes) There’s no difference between lyrics and poetry. Words are words. The only difference is the people who are in academic positions and call themselves poets and have an academic stance. They’ve got something to lose if they say it’s all poetry; if there’s not music to it, and you have to wear a certain kind of checkered shirt or something like that. It’s all the same. Lyrics are lyrics, poetry is poetry, lyrics are poetry, and poetry is lyrics. They are interchangeable to me  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry, my dear friends, is a sacred incarnation of a smile. Poetry is a sigh that dries the tears. Poetry is a spirit who dwells in the soul, whose nourishment is the heart, whose wine is affection. Poetry that comes not in this form is a false messiah  (Poetry Is Quotes) Whoever lives for poetry must read everything. How often has the light of a new idea sprung for me from a simple brochure! When one allows himself to be animated by new images, he discovers iridescence in the images of old books. Poetic ages unite in a living memory. The new age awakens the old. The old age comes to live again in the new. Poetry is never as unified as when it diversifies  (Poetry Is Quotes) The great modern heresy in poetry is to confuse the use we make of words in a poem with modalities of speech... For true poetry is never speech but always a song  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is creative expression.. By creative I mean original... Which raises the question how are we to recognize originality when we see it... It is an instinctive matter  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a mental activity in which there is no time interval between the words and the thought... And it mat inhere in a single word or phrase  (Poetry Is Quotes) What matters in poetry is form, how words work together, the sounds and silences their combinations make. The ordered effects they produce on the attentive hearer  (Poetry Is Quotes) There is always an analogy between nature and the imagination, and possibly poetry is merely the strange rhetoric of that parallel  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a purging of the world’s poverty and change and evil and death. It is a present perfecting, a satisfaction in the irremediable poverty of life  (Poetry Is Quotes) Painting is poetry which is seen and not heard, and poetry is a painting which is heard but not seen  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is simply the most beautiful, impressive and wisely effective mode of saying things, and hence its importance  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a transfusion of the ephemeral blood that sustains the universal heartbeat within human society  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is the greatest literature, and pleasure in poetry is the greatest of literary pleasures. It is also the least easy to attain and there are some people who never do attain it  (Poetry Is Quotes) Don’t ever think the poetry is dead in an old man because his forehead is wrinkled, or that his manhood has left him when his hand trembles! If they ever were there, they are there still!  (Poetry Is Quotes) The joy of poetry is that it will wait for you. Novels don’t wait for you. Characters change. But poetry will wait. I think it’s the greatest art  (Poetry Is Quotes) He who draws noble delights from the sentiments of poetry is a true poet, though he has never written a line in all his life  (Poetry Is Quotes) All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is the special medium of spiritual crazy wisdom, the form of expression that comes closest to creating a bridge between words and what is wordless  (Poetry Is Quotes) Good poetry seems too simple and natural a thing that when we meet it we wonder that all men are not always poets. Poetry is nothing but healthy speech  (Poetry Is Quotes) Show me one wicked man who has written poetry, and I will show you where his poetry is not poetry; or, rather, I will show you in his poetry no poetry at all  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is most just to its divine origin, when it administers the comforts and breathes the thoughts of religion  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is enthusiasm with wings of fire; it is the angel of high thoughts, that inspires us with the power of sacrifice  (Poetry Is Quotes) He who finds elevated and lofty pleasures in the feeling of poetry is a true poet, though he has never composed a line of verse in his entire lifetime  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is in itself strength and joy, whether it be crowned by all mankind, or left alone in its own magic hermitage  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is music in words, and music is poetry in sound: both excellent sauce, but they have lived and died poor, that made them their meat  (Poetry Is Quotes)
