Text Quotes
Poetry is like fish: if it’s fresh, it’s good; if it’s stale, it’s bad; and if you’re not certain, try it on the cat  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is the language in which man explores his own amazement... says heaven and earth in one word... speaks of himself and his predicament as though for the first time  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is one of the oldest of all art forms, and one of its powers for shamans and tribal leaders was the mnemonic  (Poetry Is Quotes) To me, poetry is somebody standing up, so to speak, and saying, with as little concealment as possible, what it is for him or her to be on earth at this moment  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a sort of truancy, a dream within the dream of life, a wild flower planted among our wheat  (Poetry Is Quotes) The purpose of poetry is to remind us how difficult it is to remain just one person, for our house is open, there are no keys in the doors, and invisible guests come in and out at will  (Poetry Is Quotes) If we’re going to solve the problems of the world, we have to learn how to talk to one another. Poetry is the language at its essence. It’s the bones and the skeleton of the language. It teaches you, if nothing else, how to choose your words  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is as necessary to comprehension as science. It is as impossible to live without reverence as it is without joy  (Poetry Is Quotes) Writing poetry is talking to oneself; yet it is a mode of talking to oneself in which the self disappears; and the product’s something that, though it may not be for everybody, is about everybody  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a dissociating and anarchic force which through analogy, associations and imagery, thrives on the destruction of known relationships  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is not efficient. If you want to learn how to cook a lobster, it’s probably best not to look to poetry. But if you want to see the word lobster in all its reactant oddity, its pied beauty, as if for the first time, go to poetry. And if you want to know what it’s like to be that lobster in the pot, that’s in poetry too  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is important. No less than science, it seeks a hold upon reality, and the closeness of its approach is the test of its success  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a search for ways of communication; it must be conducted with openness, flexibility, and a constant readiness to listen  (Poetry Is Quotes) By failing to read or listen to poets, society dooms itself to inferior modes of articulation, those of the politician, the salesman, or the charlatan. In other words, it forfeits its own evolutionary potential. For what distinguishes us from the rest of the animal kingdom is precisely the gift of speech. Poetry is not a form of entertainment and in a certain sense not even a form of art, but it is our anthropological, genetic goal. Our evolutionary, linguistic beacon  (Poetry Is Quotes) Remember, writing poetry is like making love: one will never know whether one’s own pleasure is shared  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is the revelation of a feeling that the poet believes to be interior and personal but which the reader recognizes as his own  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is a kind of magic that very few can create and even fewer can truly understand and appreciate in all its glory  (Poetry Is Quotes) That impulse I think is a form of love. Poetry is something that comes to you, rather than your having to work out its form beforehand  (Poetry Is Quotes) The best thing about conceptual poetry is that it doesn’t need to be read. You don’t have to read it. As a matter of fact, you can write books, and you don’t even have to read them. My books, for example, are unreadable. All you need to know is the concept behind them. Here’s every word I spoke for a week. Here’s a year’s worth of weather reports... and without ever having to read these things, you understand them  (Poetry Is Quotes) What you have to realize when you write poetry, or if you love poetry, is that poetry is just naturally the greatest God damn thing that ever was in the whole universe  (Poetry Is Quotes) I don’t find any direct statements in life. My poetry imitates or reproduces the way knowledge or awareness come to me, which is by fits and starts and by indirection. I don’t think poetry arranged in neat patterns would reflect that situation. My poetry is disjunct, but then so is life  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is my understanding with the world, my intimacy with things, my participation in what is real, my engagement with voices and images. This is why a poem speaks not of ideal life but of actual life: the angle of a window; the reverberation of streets, cities, rooms; shadows along a wall  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is designed to inspire love, and islam is about falling in love with the creator of the universe  (Poetry Is Quotes) I don’t think the nature of my poetry is satirical or even ironic, I think it’s essentially lyrical but again I don’t know if it’s my position to say what my poetry is like  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is ultimately mythology, the telling of stories of the soul. The old myths, the old gods, the old heroes have never died. They are only sleeping at the bottom of our minds, waiting for our call. We have need of them, for in their sum they epitomize the wisdom and experience of the race  (Poetry Is Quotes) The aim of science is to make difficult things understandable in a simpler way; the aim of poetry is to state simple things in an incomprehensible way. The two are incompatible  (Poetry Is Quotes) As poetry is the harmony of words, so music is that of notes; and as poetry is a rise above prose and oratory, so is music the exaltation of poetry  (Poetry Is Quotes) The medium of poetry is a human body: the column of air inside the chest, shaped into signifying sounds in the larynx and the mouth. In this sense, poetry is just as physical or bodily an art as dancing  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry is my cheap means of transportation, by the end of the poem the reader should be in a different place from where he started. I would like him to be slightly disoriented at the end, like I drove him outside of town at night and dropped him off in a cornfield  (Poetry Is Quotes) Poetry has its uses for despair. It can carve a shape in which a pain can seem to be; it can give one’s loss a form and dimension so that it might be loss and not simply a hopeless haunting. It can do these things for one person, or it can do them for an entire culture. But poetry is for psychological, spiritual, or emotional pain. For physical pain it is, like everything but drugs, useless  (Poetry Is Quotes)
