Text Quotes
The deepest problems of modern life derive from the claim of the individual to preserve the autonomy and individuality of his existence in the face of overwhelming social forces, of historical heritage, of external culture, and of the technique of life  (His Ex Quotes) The model should only serve the very private function for the painter of providing the starting point for his excitement  (His Ex Quotes) I have this extraordinary curiosity about all subjects of the natural and human world and the interaction between the physical sciences and the social sciences  (His Ex Quotes) Superman! Champion of the oppressed. The physical marvel who had sworn to devote his existence to helping those in need  (His Ex Quotes) God is a challenge because there is no proof of his existence and therefore the search must continue  (His Ex Quotes) Common sense tells us that this explosion of media sources should eliminate any concern over a lack of diversity of views in the marketplace and competition  (His Ex Quotes) The father who would taste the essence of his fatherhood must turn back from the plane of his experience, take with him the fruits of his journey and begin again beside his child, marching step by step over the same old road  (His Ex Quotes) Man’s characteristic privilege is that the bond he accepts is not physical but moral; that is, social. He is governed not by a material environment brutally imposed on him, but by a conscience superior to his own, the superiority of which he feels. Because the greater, better part of his existence transcends the body, he escapes the body’s yoke, but is subject to that of society  (His Ex Quotes) A good man doubles the length of his existence; to have lived so as to look back with pleasure on our past existence is to live twice  (His Ex Quotes) It is surely a matter of common observation that a man who knows no one thing intimately has no views worth hearing on things in general. The farmer philosophizes in terms of crops, soils, markets, and implements, the mechanic generalizes his experiences of wood and iron, the seaman reaches similar conclusions by his own special road; and if the scholar keeps pace with these it must be by an equally virile productivity  (His Ex Quotes) There may be here and there a worker who for certain reasons unexplainable to us does not join a union of labor. That is his right. It is his legal right, no matter how morally wrong he may be. It is his legal right, and no one can or dare question his exercise of that legal right  (His Ex Quotes) The doctors take the bodily evidence as the disease... disease is itself an impudent opinion. He throws off the feelings of the sick and imparts to them his own which are perfect health, and his explanation destroys their feelings or disease... He is like a captain who knows his business and feels confident in a storm, and his confidence sustains the crew and ship when both would be lost if the captain should give way to his fears  (His Ex Quotes) Human nature is so constituted that the propensity for evil is always intensified by external circumstances, and the morality of the individual depends much more on the conditions of his existence and the environment in which he lives than on his own will  (His Ex Quotes) He was a secret agent, and still alive thanks to his exact attention to the detail of his profession  (His Ex Quotes) The facts of his existence are plain. I know that he will never silence those unspeakable voices. He heard how people killed, and how they died and their voices infected him, coursed through his body, poisoned him. He didn’t know how to turn off the noise, or turn the hate back out onto the world like the rest of us. He turned it on himself. You could see that from the scars on him  (His Ex Quotes) Norah watched him, serious and utterly absorbed in his task, overcome by the simple fact of his existence  (His Ex Quotes) I could tell by his expression that once he got over his anger at me for keeping this secret from him, there was nothing left to talk about. He wasn’t confused. He didn’t need questions answered. He didn’t ask why or how or with whom or whether I thought maybe it might just be a phase. He didn’t ask who knew and who didn’t know or whether I thought it might ruin my career. I was his sister and he didn’t care whether I was straight or gay; it simply didn’t matter to him  (His Ex Quotes) Not gifted with genius but honestly holding his experiences deep in his heart, he kept his simplicity and humanity  (His Ex Quotes) No one can obtain felicity by pursuit. This explains why one of the elements of being happy is the feeling that a debt of gratitude is owed, a debt impossible to pay. Now, we do not owe gratitude to ourselves. To be conscious of gratitude is to acknowledge a gift  (His Ex Quotes) Your actions are your own. Your choices are your own. Each of us carries a burden of guilt for decisions made or not made. You can let that rule your whole life or you can put it behind you and move on. Only a madman lets jealousy determine the course of his existence. Only a weak man blames others for his own errors  (His Ex Quotes) He had put his hand up in class, a declaration of existence, a claim that he knew something. And that was forbidden to him. They could give a number of reasons for why they had to torment him; he was too fat, too ugly, too disgusting. But the real problem was simply that he existed, and every reminder of his existence was a crime  (His Ex Quotes) ... for limited purposes only, let me define religion as a set of symbolic forms and acts which relate man to the ultimate conditions of his existence  (His Ex Quotes) This extraordinary arrogance that change must start at the top is a way of guaranteeing that change will not happen in most companies  (His Ex Quotes) ... the world is a giant community now. This excuse of distance, time, doesn’t work... We’re all so connected. We can’t spend every second of our lives worrying about another family miles away but we somehow have to factor it in where we can  (His Ex Quotes) I watched a small man with thick calluses on both hands work 15 and 16 hours a day. I saw him once literally bleed from the bottoms of his feet, a man who came here uneducated, alone, unable to speak the language, who taught me all I needed to know about faith and hard work by the simple eloquence of his example  (His Ex Quotes) Rest in natural great peace, this exhausted mind, beaten helpless by karma and neurotic thought, like the relentless fury of the pounding waves in the infinite ocean of samsara  (His Ex Quotes) Science is rooted in the will to truth. With the will to truth it stands or falls. Lower the standard even slightly and science becomes diseased at the core. Not only science, but man. The will to truth, pure and unadulterated, is among the essential conditions of his existence; if the standard is compromised he easily becomes a kind of tragic caricature of himself  (His Ex Quotes) There is an honesty which is but decided selfishness in disguise. The person who will not refrain from expressing his or her sentiments and manifesting his or her feelings, however unfit the time, however inappropriate the place, however painful this expression may be, lays claim, forsooth, to our approbation as an honest person, and sneers at those of finer sensibilities as hypocrites  (His Ex Quotes) This fact was something I also learned from this first novel that I needed personal experience to invent, to fantasize, to create fiction, but at the same time I needed some distance, some perspective on this experience in order to feel free enough to manipulate it and to transform it into fiction. If the experience is very close, I feel inhibited. I have never been able to write fiction about something that has happened to me recently. If the closeness of the real reality, of living reality, is to have a persuasive effect on my imagination, I need a distance, a distance in time and in space  (His Ex Quotes) His heritage to his children wasn’t words or possessions, but an unspoken treasure, the treasure of his example as a man and a father  (His Ex Quotes)
