Text Quotes
I wanted to write plays. I was at Yale graduate school at the time for English literature, not for acting... I liked the idea of collaboration, and I thought if I’m gonna write plays, I should learn something about speaking the lines that I might try to write.  (English Literature Quotes) I have an English literature degree. I wanted to be the next great American novelist from a very early age, but I put it aside for a while, because I got very realistic at one point  (English Literature Quotes) And in spite of everything, Ireland remains the brain of the Kingdom. The English, judiciously practical and ponderous, furnish the over-stuffed stomach of humanity with a perfect gadget--the water closet. The Irish, condemned to express themselves in a language not their own, have stamped on it the mark of their own genius and compete for glory with the civilized nations. This is then called English literature  (English Literature Quotes) School was rough for me. I was a good student in middle school, but high school wasn’t so fun. I still pulled through, though! I excelled in art, fashion, history and English literature - anything creative. Math and science I struggled a bit more in  (English Literature Quotes) I love literature, the English language and storytelling. I read English Literature.  (English Literature Quotes) My brother and I were both good at science, and we were both good at English literature. Either one of us could have gone either way.  (English Literature Quotes) I never intended to be a historian of religion. My aim was to become a professor of English Literature in a university, but I had a series of absolute career disasters and found myself making television programs about the nature of religion and about Christian history and started to discover about other religious traditions, and that was an absolute eye-opener for me.  (English Literature Quotes) I think of science fiction as being part of the great river of imaginative fiction that has flowed through English literature, probably for 400 or 500 years, well predating modern science.  (English Literature Quotes) I study English literature but my friends are doing psychology and things like that. No one cares about acting there. It’s not competitive and it’s a nice environment for me.  (English Literature Quotes) I soon realized that a student of English literature who does not know the Bible does not understand a good deal of what is going on in what he reads: The most conscientous student will be continually misconstruing the implications, even the meaning.  (English Literature Quotes) I fell even more deeply in love with Tolkiens legendarium after studying Old English literature at uni, as I got a sense of the historical events and cultures that Tolkien used to create his world. My favourite of his imaginary locations is Lothlorien  (English Literature Quotes) I loved reading when I was young. I was just completely taken by stories. And I remember taking that into English literature at school and taking that into Shakespeare and finding that opened up a whole world of self-expression to me that I didn’t have access to previously.  (English Literature Quotes) Nineteenth-century English literature I know; 19th-century sewage systems, not so much  (English Literature Quotes) I am especially indebted to a 10th grade English teacher who encouraged me to read great works of literature.  (English Literature Quotes) I think in general there’s no point in going into a field like English literature if you’re not going to have fun with it.  (English Literature Quotes) I went to University College London and read English literature, then realised if you were interested in story and narrative, film was the way to go.  (English Literature Quotes) As a student in England, I studied French and English literature. I read L’Etranger and the rhythm of the novel felt familiar to me - very African.  (English Literature Quotes) I loved English literature - if didn’t it would have been hard - but I had to learn it myself. I remembered ways to repeat words, to put more emphasis on certain lines.  (English Literature Quotes) I often think that eventually I’d love to do some papers... my correspondence if life calms down a bit, but I think I’d do history or English literature... I’ve had enough of journos.  (English Literature Quotes) The cliché is dead poetry. English, being the language of an imaginative race, abounds in clichés, so that English literature is always in danger of being poisoned by its own secretions.  (English Literature Quotes) I left school at 16 but I wish I’d gone to university - I think I would have studied English literature. I had a knack for that. But I don’t think you have the kind of wisdom at 16 to make that decision  (English Literature Quotes) When I entered college, it was to study liberal arts. At the University of Pennsylvania, I studied English literature, but I fell in love with broadcasting, with telling stories about other people’s exploits  (English Literature Quotes) I was always drawn to teachers who made class interesting. I suspect it would be English literature, Shakespeare and so forth. I’ve always been deeply, deeply in love with that kind of thing  (English Literature Quotes) My mother’s father taught English literature. When I was about ten or eleven, I could recite Macaulay’s ‘Lays of Ancient Rome.’ While other kids were playing pedestrian war games, I’d be Horatius keeping the bridge  (English Literature Quotes) It’s an absurd error to put modern English literature in the curriculum. You should read contemporary literature for pleasure or not at all. You shouldn’t be taught to monkey with it  (English Literature Quotes) There’s always a host of voices you’re inspired by. I love Don DeLillo, and I love Isaac Bashevis Singer, and I love Beckett, and I love Pinter. He’s one of the funniest voices in English literature since Dickens  (English Literature Quotes) When I was at school, I was terrible at algebra and arithmetic, but I was always the best at English and literature. And acting, of course  (English Literature Quotes)
