I swear, I didn’t really go in thinking, ‘I’ll be the Simon Cowell’ of ‘Top Chef.’ I was just used to being a judge on British food shows where people are much more outspoken and rather rude. That’s the culture over here  (British Food Quotes) It’s very different doing a food show in America and doing one in Britain. I did a 20-part series for the BBC series called ‘Eating With the Enemy.’ The budget for all 20 episodes was probably the budget for a single episode of ‘Top Chef.’ It’s the difference between making a home movie in your backyard and going to Hollywood  (British Food Quotes) I wanted to be a great white hunter, a prospector for gold, or a slave trader. But then, when I was eight, my parents sent me to a boarding school in South Africa. It was the equivalent of a British public school with cold showers, beatings and rotten food. But what it also had was a library full of books  (British Food Quotes) The US head of state grew up on food stamps. The British head of state grew up on the postage stamps  (British Food Quotes) I was born in the 60s and grew up in the 70s - not exactly the best decade for food in British history. It was horrendous. It was a time when, as a nation, we excelled in art and music and acting and photography and fashion - all creative skills... all apart from cooking  (British Food Quotes) I cook British food, but it doesn’t mean I’m jingoistic about it. People can cook very good fusion food  (British Food Quotes) In the 1970s, British food was beginning to get good, whereas in France it was just starting its long, sad decline. My most memorable meals, however, have been in Italy  (British Food Quotes) I want to know where my food comes from and the conditions in which it’s grown. I also want to embrace traditional British produce, and seasonality.  (British Food Quotes) More than any other in Western Europe, Britain remains a country where a traveler has to think twice before indulging in the ordinary food of ordinary people.  (British Food Quotes) About 30% of fresh food is thrown away in supermarkets every day, although they will deny it. British households are throwing an estimated 30% of their food away, too.  (British Food Quotes) If there is to be any hope of prosperity for this country it is by reversing that policy which made us simply the kitchen garden for supplying the British with cheap food.  (British Food Quotes) In Great Britain the price of food is at a higher level than in any other country, and consequently, the British artisan labours at a disadvantage in proportion to the higher rate of his food.  (British Food Quotes) India introduced Britain to vegetarianism - see Tristram Stuart’s excellent first book on this - and it is possible, indeed all too easy, to be a vegetarian in India and eat extraordinarily good, varied food every day, with very few ‘repeats.’  (British Food Quotes) What worries me is that, because of the amount of media coverage of food, Britain seems to have become a foodie nation - but I’m not sure it actually has. I’m not sure there’s been a huge change in the pantry at home or what we cook for supper.  (British Food Quotes) Yes, I’m obsessed with health, which has been an interesting journey. I went down the raw-food diet route, but got ill. It was really hard, especially in Britain in winter, trying to survive on raw carrots. I became so ill and anemic, so I stopped that and became a vitamin junkie. I just ate lots of vegetables, exercised and breathed.  (British Food Quotes) Even though the Olympics take place during Ramadan, some Muslim athletes said they will not fast during games. Then, after sampling the British food, they said, on second thought, fasting sounds good.  (British Food Quotes)
